Meet Lisa Silvera of Get Detangled, Personal Development Coaching in Santa Monica

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Silvera.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Lisa. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Most importantly, so much gratitude to VoyageLA for providing this amazing platform for me to share my story!

I am the eldest of three siblings, a young sister and a very special little brother born with severe down syndrome. I am NYC-born to AfroLatino immigrant parents. After a short stint in NYC, we moved and I was raised, for the most part, in Westchester County, NY (Upstate). I attended a progressive public school system and gravitated to writing, art story and documentary photography and film. My high school senior trip consisted of a trip to Mainland China – the first group of civilians permitted into China after Nixon. After a very “colorful and adventurous” adolescence. I attended college in Boston at Northeastern, Emerson and Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs. I studied Mass Communications, English, Art History, Psychology and Feminist Theory/Women’s Studies. While in school I worked as a bartender, stylist, hostess, Au Pair, voiceover artist, executive assistant, PA, extra actor and in retail – and I am convinced that collectively, those early experiences inform who I am today – it was a wild time!

Made my way back to NYC after school and lived in the heart of Times Square/Hell’s Kitchen in a kooky, but glorious rent-controlled apartment and began my journey in the fast-paced Fashion & Beauty Advertising & PR industry. I toiled as an Account Director and AE for some of the most renowned agencies, individuals and brands in the late 80’s & 90’s when excess reigned supreme and cell phones weighed 2lbs. I worked for others successfully but knew then that I was built for entrepreneurship & mentorship.

I took a leap faith and opened my first PR/MKTG agency in the early 90’s primarily beauty, accessories and fashion and had a ball.

Soon after, my heart throbbed, and I wrapped out NY & followed love to Miami. With my partner at the time, I CoFounded 2 Marketing Agencies and Art Gallery/Incubator in Wynwood, the US home of Art Basel and held editorial positions at three magazines. Met and experienced a ton of interesting people, reinforced my commitment to art and at the same time found refuge from the flashing lights, nightclubs and over-abundance of cocktails by volunteering at shelters for women, children & animals.

Working with the women was amazing. Hearing their stories, learning lessons from them and witnessing resilience of that caliber was game-changing for me. My compassion and awarenesses for the human spirit heightened.

I started studying, reading and taking more classes about the human condition & felt the first calls to service. I engaged my first life-coaching client in Miami and the ball was rolling.

13 years strong and gut-wrenching breakup under my belt, I liquidated my life and moved to LA to start anew. I lived with my Goddess best friend and her family in their magical home in Hancock Park and spent the first six months doing yoga, hiking the mountains and stairs and healing my soul.

Relying on my career experience I leaned in hard on Branding, Marketing and PR once again, and ran a small, successful agency for a few years. It paid the bills but my heart continued to hear the call to coaching and art.

In 2016, I committed my energies to my coaching and Get Detangled Personal Development Coaching was born. It was the best decision I could have made and it still allowed me time and energy to work on other things of interest while I built my practice.

I began making my art, which is crystal-infused Japanese Shibori and Tie-Dye ( & @soulveracreates on Instagram) and finally the congruency between my call to coaching service, my deep spirituality and my artistic expression was finally realized – and here I am!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth? No. Definitely not. As matter of fact, it’s been incredibly challenging. Would I trade it for a “smoother” path? NO WAY. This road has taught me so many lessons, presented me with so many “learning” obstacles and has confirmed for me that I can do anything if I put my mind to and help and support people all around me along my journey. It’s pretty magical. I have so many amazing people and tribes that really want to see me succeed and THAT I am so very grateful for.

Some of the struggles included abandoning what I “know” and was historically an expert at and venturing into something so abstract.

Also, I battled (and still do) with judging myself rather harshly about my “success” as it correlates to my bank account, etc. drastically switching lanes mid-journey is tricky and at times it has been really hard but again, totally worth it.

Please tell us more about your work. What do you do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
I am a life coach. I work one on one with humans and I speak to small and large groups to empower them to build self-awareness, to sort or “detangle” issues, decisions, dynamics and build healthy relationships. This contributes to them gaining more clarity and awareness so they can make better decisions, heal trauma, and really, just be happier and more aware of the dark or shadow parts of themselves or their various dynamics. I do not soft-pedal with my clients. We go in deep and it is NOT easy, but the process is well worth it. It’s where the magic happens and the healing & growth happens.

I have found that the people that relate to me most are people desirous of change or shifts. People WANT to be happy. They WANT to grow, They WANT to heal but sometimes it can be really overwhelming and having a coach in your corner to tell you like it is, help you course correct, really self-examine and then take what are perceived as scary leaps really helps.

I am most proud of the fact that I get to share my passion for people in a way that benefits them and can be instrumental in them living a more authentic, purposeful and joyful & love-filled lives.

I don’t really know sets me apart from others because I don’t really spend much time comparing myself to other coaches. I am just really focused on my work and on projects that are related or complementary in nature. I am focused on helping foster joy, healing and personal success for myself and the people who entrust me with their journey of discovery and development.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
LOVE, compassion & commitment. (Sorry that’s three, but they go and in hand!)
