Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa McCabe.
Hi Lisa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Before Lovely Leaps Lisa designed the cables inside of government drones at General Atomics and Ricky is the director of Marketing for REIG. Four years into working at General Atomics, we were expecting our first baby girl Gianna-Grace. That was the first time the desire to be home entered my heart. Lovely Leaps started when I was six months pregnant. It was only an idea and I didn’t know how to execute it. Ricky encouraged me to just go for it but I was paralyzed with fear not knowing how to navigate everything so I dropped the idea and continued working at General Atomics. It wasn’t until my daughter was four months old when my maternity leave ended, I fully realized I didn’t want to go back to work. So before I went back, I went outside in July 2018 and looked at the sky and said God, I don’t want to go back to work, I want a business of my own where I bring in triple what I made in engineering, I spend more time with my daughter, I get to dance and work with children. After that prayer, I dropped the idea and went to work the following day. It wasn’t until a month later a school had called me asking if I taught dance to preschoolers and would I be interested? At first, I said no because I had just gone back to work and I’m trying to figure out the mommy-hood thing. After thinking about it and Ricky encouraging me, I called them and said yes but I could only teach on Fridays and that’s how Lovely Leaps started! From there, my class grew from 6 to 24 kids at that one school Horizon Preschool! It was at that point my husband Ricky was like, I think you found your business beautiful.
From then I went on to quit my job in July 2019 and we are now in eight schools with 90+ students only one year later! Later on, I wanted a way to experience dance with my then 13 months old so I started a movement and music dance class on the weekend. This class was specifically for my mamas that worked full time. Being a working mom, I knew how much it sucked to want to do the mommy and me classes but you couldn’t because the only class offered was 10 am on a Wednesday! From there, the class has grown and turned into something I could only dream of. Most of our toddlers have both parents in the class and I owe that all to my amazing husband Ricky. He wanted to be apart of the class so he decided I don’t care if it’s all women I’m dancing with my daughter! Because of his decision to join it made the other dads more open to coming too. We have formed such a beautiful little Leaps Family. In March 2020 COVID HIT and we lost EVERYTHING! Our studio & school contracts it was a hard and confusing time. It was then when I decided to pivot and go virtual! I started to offer every Thursday FREE virtual dance classes for ages 1-6 years old and at the end of the month, they get to perform for a princess! This idea caught on as we are all happy in our homes and got the attention of local and national press! From there, we started offering classes for older kids and charging a small fee for each of the classes. Doing that was a game-changer. We went from a few hundred virtual students to 9000 students this year!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In March 2020 along with the pandemic, I was diagnosed with a condition called spasmotic dysphonia making it impossible to speak. I would open my mouth and nothing but a whisper would come out. I was like how am I going to teach students virtually if I can’t speak! I hit my lowest when a parent left a nasty review about my voice and I was like thats it, I can’t do this. I had my pitty party and pulled myself up. I said to myself well, I just need to hire a team and so I did. The girls have been amazing and after I hired them, we tripled our income and clients! Another struggle has been me! I feel we are our own worst critics. I couldn’t do any of this without my husband Ricky cheering me on. As cheesy as it sounds, he’s my backbone in this business and in life. When I’m feeling overwhelmed because I can’t find the right teacher or enrollment for one school isn’t looking great, he always has a positive outlook or an encouraging word. Specifically with the movement and music class was my biggest challenge. I remember there was one time no one showed up and I was so defeated. My husband told me to look at this as an opportunity to fine tune the class. So instead of teaching, I came up with new material! I was so ready to throw in the towel though but because I stuck it out as my husband said, we now have three locations for movement and music! They are in La Costa, Fallbrook and Solona Beach! It pays to always have a cheerleader in your corner. I just happened to marry mine! 🙂
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Lovely Leaps?
Lovely Leaps is a multiple location in-person and virtual Dance studio! Our mission is to cultivate the love of dance in the younger generation. We focus on dance for ages ten months to ten years old. We teach Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop and Cheer. What sets us apart is our main focus is to make sure each child feels seen, heard & loved in their dance journey. We strive to have dance in their lives for a long period of time because of how much they love it. Most children by the age of 12 are burned out with dance because it’s so rigorous on the mind and body. Even less make it to 18 and so on… My vision is to give children a solid base of love for the art form of dance so when they are older to do the harder stuff, the children’s love for dance will carry them through. Another fun thing we offer are themed virtual classes based off of children’s favorite shows like Descendants or zombies! Make sure to join us every Thursday at 9:45am and 10:30am for FREE virtual dance classes for ages 1-6 years old! Go to our website www.lovelyleaps.com to sign up! We also serve schools as a great virtual PE option.
