Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Goshon.
Lisa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My fascination with fashion started nearly 40 years ago while a 7th grader at Highland Park Junior High School in Topeka, Kansas. I remember that moment as if it were yesterday. It was in the dead of winter (Kansas gets brrrr cold) and all the students were gathered in the school gymnasium for a pep rally. The principal announced there would be a “talent” show. Before he could finish saying the word show, the gym exploded with students screaming, chanting, cheering, and clapping all from the prospect of showcasing their talents. It was pure pandemonium.
I knew right then and there I wanted to do something my peers had never seen before. I decided to create a dance routine to the song “Rappers Delight” by the Sugarhill Gang and design some bomb ass outfits from scratch! I believe that’s when my love affair with fashion began. I took a plain white A-line dress pattern and altered it. The finished product was a white satin dress with a black satin sash. The big surprise was the deep V that I cut out of the back of the dress. Now, remember, this was at a time when women still didn’t show much skin. When I modeled it onstage, the entire audience lost their minds. I’ll never forget that moment.
However, my dream of becoming a world-renowned fashion designer was banished from my mind as quickly as it came. During that time growing up in the Midwest meant going the traditional route. Go to college, get married, have babies and work in a nice corporate job. That’s exactly what I did. For the next 25 years, I worked in corporate America in various positions as a senior advisor in companies like Textron Industries, Sprint and Hallmark Cards as well as positions in information technology. Most recently, I developed the first biometric security software which advances how users’ protect their digital content. With fingers crossed and prayers tossed it’s just a matter of time before every smartphone has this capability.
While my corporate bio might be impressive to some, it’s always been my creative spirit and love of fashion that drives my inspiration, innovation and out the box thinking. In 2014, that’s exactly what happened!
While helping cannabis owners develop their brand strategy and gain a foothold over competitors, I decided I wanted a piece of the Mary Jane pie in the sky and that’s when Mary Jane Runway was born!
Mary Jane Runway is considered the “Gucci” of cannabis clothing. It’s the first and ONLY “designer” clothing line to feature cannabis-themed apparel. Unlike stoner clothing which typically displays a big green marijuana leaf emblazoned on the garment, Mary Jane Runway designs are beautiful and aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Whether it’s the long flowing kimonos or a designer hoodie sweatshirt, Mary Jane Runway garments are in a class of their own. Made using the finest fabrics in the world, our products not only look good but customers love how they feel.
Even though Marijuana is now our culture, it’s still taboo. Many users still hide the fact they consume and those who don’t often frown or look down on those that do. Hence one of the reasons why Mary Jane Runway was created. To help erase the stigma around marijuana by showing her true beauty. “We Made Marijuana Beautiful!”
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
By no means has the road been easy. I’ve dealt with a catastrophic illness followed by a year-long stay in the hospital and subsequent three (3) years recovery. My mother passed away, I got divorced and have spent tens of thousands of dollars trying to get Mary Jane Runway off the ground. I’ve met some really good people in the fashion and cannabis industry as well as some assholes. I’m 100% disabled and many days I can’t get out of the bed. People often look at me and automatically assume I’m good because I don’t fit into the stereotypical mode of a disabled person. But none of those obstacles have kept me from pursuing my passion of designing and innovating and making marijuana fashion mainstream.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Mary Jane Runway – what should we know?
Mary Jane Runway is the first and ONLY clothing line to feature “designer” cannabis-themed apparel. As the owner and creative director, I design all the prints and manage the entire manufacturing process from concept to delivery. I’m most proud of the fact I’ve done this without the help of a design team, little to no funding, and not much support from the fashion world. I believe the concept of “designer” cannabis clothing is what sets Mary Jane Runway apart!
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Yes, there is one person who has been there from the beginning. His name is Herman and I owe him a tremendous amount of gratitude. He’s the person who accompanies me on events, carries the load when I cannot. To this day, he’s my ride or die and will do whatever it takes to see Mary Jane Runway go to the top!
