Meet Lisa Arnett of Skel & Co. aka Skel Design

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Arnett.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Lisa. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I always dabbled in art and design while growing up but never thought of myself as an artist (I still don’t – I can’t draw!). I studied economics and art history in college at UCSB and my first “real” job after graduating, was at an ad agency in Vail, Colorado (where I learned how to use an actual typesetting machine and photostat camera – I know I am dating myself here).

After a few career fits and starts, I eventually found myself working in the eyewear/sunglass business where I mostly focused on product development and sales & marketing. I spent many years in eyewear, traveled the world on business and absolutely loved it, but somewhere in the back of my mind, I had always dreamed of having a greeting card business someday.

I began making some “to do” notepads on a whim after having a funny conversation with my girlfriend Jo about how we could never keep track of our to-do lists once we had kids. Between works, kids, home, pets, husbands, etc. it became almost impossible. My first notepad design was “to do or not to do.” Well, I guess I choose “to do.”

To complement my line of notepads, I eventually started designing some greeting cards (a dream come true), and here I am now… today Skel & Co offers a wide range of gift items including greeting cards, notepads, glass ornaments, printed wine glasses and bags, hand-woven totes and more.

It all started with a Wink and a smile…

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has generally been a smooth road. There are always ups and downs, but overall it’s been fun and exciting. We could always use more money to expand production, but our tagline and motto at Skel is “live happy…” so we try to take that to heart even during the more challenging times.

Skel & Co. aka Skel Design – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
BRIGHT. MODERN. HAPPY. Designed to inspire a smile.

Skel & Company is a paper goods studio offering funny, sarcastic, touching, sweet and above all, unique greeting cards and more. Humorous paper products and gifts for clever people. Looking to inspire smart people to laugh more. I often say we are a little bit sweet and a little be sour (our sarcastic and snarky side often takes over!!). We are known for our humorous cards.

As a company we are committed to being kind to the earth, for example, we use recycled paper, compostable packaging, non-toxic water-based inks, and sustainable fabrics wherever possible. Not only are we friendly, but we’re eco-friendly!! Above all, we are committed to our customers. They are the most important part of our business, and we take pride in offering excellent customer service.

We are dedicated, hard-working and determined.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Landing a couple of large highly respected nationwide accounts at our first industry trade show.
