Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey Mathews.
Lindsey, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised in Texas. Starry nights, old country music, and brisket are still some of my favorite things. There are three big milestones in my life that definitely influenced the path the universe has had paved out for me. I was diagnosed with asthma by the time I was two. From that point forward, I was constantly on medications, which did nothing to help my gut development properly. When I was in fourth grade I had a severe asthma attack that sent me into the local hospital. After walking into the local hospital, I passed out and later learned that they transferred me via an ambulance to the children’s hospital in the city. I was in ICU for 6 days. It was hear that I had a near death, outer body experience. I realized that I was here, on earth, to serve people and that I need to go back to unfinished business. That was milestone #1. Fast forward to high school in New Braunfels, TX. If you have ever seen the show Friday Night Lights…welcome to my high school experience- clear eyes, full heart, can’t lose. I was a cheerleader and played soccer all throughout high school. My junior year I tore my ACL, MCL, and meniscus in my left knee. Good bye athletic scholarships and the life as an athlete that I identified with for so long. I interviewed 3 surgeons and chose the doc that wore cowboy boots and told me that I would be 100% if I put in the work. He had me do training specifically to go into surgery. This doc also encouraged me to see a chiropractor and rolfer and acupuncturist, which, in 2001, was completely ahead of his time. This doc made me want to go to med school. That was milestone # 2. Fast forward to my spring semester of my junior year in college at Texas A&M University (Whoop!). I went on a medical mission trip to Tanzania, Africa. It was here that I realized I did not want to prescribe medications, but that I needed to serve and heal people through the use of my hands, my energy, and the power of touch. That was milestone #3. Instead of going to medical school, I went to chiropractic school. Upon graduating from chiropractic school, I traveled the world working with some of the best athletes and actors to help them prepare and recover from their big games and performances. I did this for about 2.5 years before being called into the birth world via some patients of mine. I knew nothing at the time, so I signed up for doula training and childbirth educator training with the one and only Ana Paula Markel of Bini Birth. I took as many birth education courses as I could from HypnoBirthing, Sacred Pregnancy, Innate Postpartum Healing, and more. It was back in 2011 that I started the BIRTHFIT blog just based on my experiences with patients and doula clients. From there, it grew exponentially. We now have 42 Regional Directors across the United States, 1 in the Netherlands, and 1 in the U.K. We also have over 50 coaches and professionals across the United States that have completed their BIRTHFIT certification program. Our BIRTHFIT Tribe is absolutely an amazing group of passionate, intelligent women full of integrity and love.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not. If you know me, then you know that my life has not been full of sunshine and rainbows. I’ve been abandoned, abused, sick, and absolutely had to hit my personal rock bottom to discover my calling. I’m a vessel for this BIRTHFIT movement. I had to become aware of my own bullshit and stories so that this BIRTHFIT movement could grow wings and fly. And believe me, it’s a constant practice to not get in the way of yourself.
There are two great books- Mindset and The Obstacle is the Way. Both are fabulous books and talk about mindset. Through struggle (and obstacles) come great learning lessons and chances to evolve even more as human and business. How will we know what we are made of if we don’t hit the obstacle head on?
I will share this… Two days before our first BIRTHFIT, I had $75 in the bank. No one knew that, but Logan (my fiancé) told me at the time that it will make a great story one day. And he was right. The first annual BIRTHFIT Summit was a success! And, now we have businesses sponsor the Annual BIRTHFIT Summit.
BIRTHFIT – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
BIRTHFIT educates and empowers women throughout the motherhood transition. Our focus is from preconception to the end of the first year postpartum. Our definition of BIRTHFIT is an empowered and educated state of readiness, specific to childbirth that is achieved through an evolved practice in fitness, nutrition, chiropractic, and mindset. BIRTHFIT is a method, a style, and a choice in how to approach the motherhood transition. Here in Los Angeles, we offer chiropractic care, personal training, and doula services for women. We also have group classes. We have a birth education course called the BIRTHFIT Prenatal Series in which a woman would take with her birth partner so that they can prepare for labor and delivery. We have the BIRTHFIT Postpartum Series, which is our answer for rehab after baby. There is nothing like this in our country. We focus on breath work, innate motor patterns, and functional movement that will transfer into daily activities. This sets a solid foundation before returning to any previous workout routine such as CrossFit, Triathlons, Soul Cycle, HIIT, etc.
The BIRTHFIT Podcast is also recorded here in Los Angeles. This podcast is rad! And, it’s bring a ton of real information and stories to women and men all over the world!
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
By far, the first Annual BIRTHFIT Summit. And, then the BIRTHFIT Coach Seminars in Venice, CA and Dallas, TX.
The magic in the room is undeniable. When powerful women come together in love and with a desire to change the world, the energy is pure magic!
