Meet Lindsay McCormick of Bite Toothpaste Bits

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay McCormick.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
When I learned that one billion toothpaste tubes ended up in landfills every year (that’s enough to fill up the Empire State Building fifty times, every single year!) I knew I wanted to make a change.

I’ve always been passionate about sustainability, but I was traveling all the time for work, tossing out those little travel toothpaste tubes that I envisioned sitting in a landfill somewhere, leaking out chemicals like SLS and triclosan and artificial dyes and flavors.

I had never read the back of a toothpaste tube until I started looking into alternatives and turns out, there’s some really nasty stuff in there. Everything that was on the market, I either didn’t like the ingredients, or they were packaged in plastic too… so I decided to make my own.

I bought my own tableting machine, experimented with tons of different ingredients, I talked to every dentist and dental hygienist who would give me the time of day and even took open source online chemistry classes to develop the formula that we use today.

Our Bits are free from harsh chemicals, dyes, artificial flavors, and unnecessary fillers and they come in recyclable, refillable or compostable packaging.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s all part of the adventure, right? This is my first business, and I’m figuring it out as I go along.

I’ve been super lucky to be able to pull in some incredibly smart people (my long term boyfriend being one of them) to help build Bite to what it is now, but still, every day there’s a new fire.

Today, it was a printing mishap with our label company. Tomorrow, it will be something else… but that’s part of a growing business, you’re a part business owner, part firefighter and that’s okay!

Bite Toothpaste Bits – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Bite Toothpaste Bits is an all natural, zero waste toothpaste tablet company. We sell dry, power-packed tablets in glass jars meant to be refilled with compostable refill packets meaning the first glass bottle we send you are meant to be the only one you will ever need. All of our packagings is recyclable, compostable or biodegradable and we use the highest quality ingredients around. We’re vegan, cruelty-free and made in Southern California.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I’m really proud of our day-to-day. We are a small but mighty team, and we’re up against a lot. Commerce, in general, isn’t set up to be sustainable, high-quality ingredients aren’t cheap or easy to come by, it continues to blow our minds how there seems to be plastic in EVERYTHING… but we continue to question and innovate, and we refuse to compromise our values and the eco-friendly expectations we set for ourselves.
