Meet Linda Mason of LuLuBdesign in West Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Linda Mason.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Linda. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m an East Coast girl who settled in L.A. after traveling around Europe and the Mid East for a couple of years. Upon my return, I launched myself as a wardrobe stylist for film, video and commercials, the perfect job to express my love of fashion, fabrics, and design. A career as a producer and photographer ensued and then I embarked on an unexpected journey of reinvention and entrepreneurship inspired by my travels.

I wanted to create something to wear that was chic, beautiful and traveled well. My go-to look has always been leggings or jeans, tee shirts and of course, a little black dress. I was always looking for that special piece that would add versatility to my styling. My guideline for dressing has always been, “if it’s comfortable and it makes me feel like a million bucks – I’m wearing it!”

I love to repurpose things. And I was trying to make a beautiful leopard scarf work with an outfit I wanted to wear. The problem was that it was too bulky, too long and too wide and every way I styled it still didn’t look right. An idea came to me and I spent the day making changes to the scarf. I cut it and pinned it and tried it on a few times and each time seeing what else was needed. I then added some details, like buttons and loops and I finally got the results I was looking for: a simple, chic, silk chiffon piece that I could style different ways.

The big test came when I wore it out on the streets. Suddenly women were complimenting me on my wrap and asking where I got it. I began making the LuLuwrap as gifts and soon had many sales requests.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Being an entrepreneur is not easy especially when you’re doing almost everything yourself. I’ve been working diligently on brand recognition and building my website for e-commerce. I think one of my greatest struggles is getting people to buy the LuLuwrap online.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about LuLuBdesign – what should we know?
The LuLuBdesign brand launched in 2015 when I created the LuLuwrap, a versatile, silk chiffon, boho-chic, fashion accessory for the woman who loves playful expression. The LuLuwrap can be styled 12 different way to scale any look to the next level.

I realized there was a need for a new kind of easy fashion that lets women transition from morning to night. The LuLuwrap soon gained popularity because it’s perfect for the woman on the run and for those of us who are looking for that very special statement piece to mix. up with other clothes in our wardrobe.

It also fits right in with the collective realization of chic-onomics, slow fashion and the KonMari method. Our customers are women who demand quality, appreciate the versatility and desire freedom of choice and they want to look fashionable without spending a lot of money. They’re women who embrace their confidence and beauty and want to be surrounded by the things that bring them joy. Our customers want to keep their clothing longer than one season and our timeless design ensures that it can be worn year-round and never go out of style.

I am most proud of the fact that we create all of our fabric designs which are inspired from mystical symbols, geometrics, florals, and photographs. We then have our unique designs printed on silk chiffon and then transform them into our wearable art.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
There are so many friends and family that have encouraged me. I have a great group of women around me who have been dedicated to spreading the word about LuLuBdesign. Most importantly, my friend Steve Hylen has played a very large role in our success. He’s a creative genius at graphic design and photography and is always thinking of different ways to visually express our ideas. It’s wonderful to be able to trust someone and creatively bounce ideas around with them and then see them come to life.
