Meet Limei Zhao Hshieh of Limei Zhao Illustration in Pasadena

Today we’d like to introduce you to Limei Zhao Hshieh.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Six years ago, I came to the U.S. to study illustration at the Art Center College of Design. After graduating, I worked at a theme park design company for about a year.

Theme park design greatly contributed to my illustrations, because it deepened my understanding of image-making by teaching me how to design the basic structure of buildings and how to make viewers feel more involved with a picture.

In July of 2017, I was given a chance to work on Matt Groening’s latest TV show, Disenchantment, as a background Designer. The experience of drawing medieval architecture on a daily basis and collaborating with various talented artists was extremely joyful.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Overall, the journey of becoming an artist has been pretty smooth for me; however, there are some bumps in the road. I am extremely blessed with supportive parents and a spouse who encourages me to follow my dreams. One of the few bumps in my journey is finding work that I am deeply passionate about.

Another obstacle is the never-ending struggle of trying to become the best artist that I can be in terms of technique and concept. I am always thinking about the question, “How can I make my illustrations better?”

Limei Zhao Illustration – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am an illustrator who specializes in background and props design for TV animation. My business is to draw and create environments for cartoons. Sometimes I freelance for certain clients by designing backgrounds for them. Other times, I work with a team at a TV animation studio.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment in my career so far is seeing my background designs for Disenchantment live on TV.
