Meet Lily Taban of Fig & First in Downtown Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lily Taban.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I graduated college in 2011 with a Bachelor’s Degree in journalism with an emphasis in public relations. I secured a job immediately at a boutique public relations firm in Santa Monica where I worked for close to two years and assisted on a variety of accounts including fashion, entertainment, non-profit, and tech clients. Because the agency was so small, I wore many hats and juggled many tasks, so it was really the perfect job after college to get my feet wet in the industry and build my portfolio.

For the next few years, I bounced around between in-house and agency PR never really able to settle at one company. The thought of creating my own business never crossed my mind but I noticed that I felt a type of void and lack of satisfaction when working for others. Along the way, I had picked up a side project I was very passionate about which helped me generate an extra income that could serve as a financial safety net should I decide to take some time off and look for a different employer. I began looking for different jobs but didn’t want to fall into the same pattern of starting somewhere new and exciting only to feel bored after the first few months so rather than continue sending out applications I decided to branch off on my own and create what would later become Fig & First.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Not exactly. It’s been a bumpy ride but not necessarily in a bad way. I think of it as more of a roller coaster; you’re both excited and nervous while you make the climb to the top, then you drop at 100 miles an hour while screaming and maybe crying, then it’s smooth sailing for a couple seconds before it starts to get bumpy and next thing you know you’re caught in back to back vertical loops that make you want to throw up. But in the end, you make it back safely and for some reason, you really want to ride that roller coaster again, and it gets more fun every time. Sure, there will be days where the ride breaks down or comes to a halt right in the middle of a loop and you’re stuck for a couple hours for maintenance and repair, but you get braver with each ride and look forward to newer and more exciting roller coasters in the future.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Fig & First is a boutique public relations firm based in Downtown Los Angeles offering the finest services in national media relations, talent seeding, branding, communication strategy, and results-oriented campaigns. Simply put, we are storytellers; we work with brands to develop their stories and build meaningful relationships with relevant media and influencers.

We’re very selective when it comes our clients and this really sets us apart from our competitors. We only take on projects that resonate with us to ensure we’re doing our very best work for our clients. Whereas some agencies may take a more “by the numbers” approach, we approach every project in a personal way that is unique to each of our clients based on their needs and goals. We pride ourselves in the transparent relationships we build with our clients and aim to work with brands who share a similar aesthetic so the partnership becomes mutually beneficial for both of us.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, you’d either find my nose buried in a book or sketch pad. I was very creative and loved expressing that creativity through art and in writing. I don’t draw or paint as much as I used to but I think much of the creativity and storytelling that goes into each project comes from the hours I would spend flying through books and using my free time to write poetry and short stories. I’ve always been a storyteller by nature so it makes complete sense that I would pursue a career doing just that for brands that I’m passionate about.
