Meet Liliana Villasenor-Sanchez of Lily’s Whisk

Today we’d like to introduce you to Liliana Villasenor-Sanchez.

Hi Liliana, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started working at a bakery in Sacramento, CA right out of high school. During my time at the bakery, I came to really love the work of art behind making these delicious treats. And it was amazing for the 10+ years I was there, but then Covid hit. It made me rethink of what was really important in my life. I wanted the freedom to design my own masterpieces while not sacrificing my time for my husband and family. So we made the big move, during a pandemic! I’ve been living in Vista for a year now and it has honestly been the best decision of my life. During this time, I have been able to connect with many vendors in the wedding/party industry, which I now call my friends, as well as participate in many pop up markets. I put my all in every piece of dessert that comes out of my home kitchen, and I don’t intend to stop there. I hope to one day open my little shop.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not! To begin, the move across the state was hard. And being that it was in the middle of a pandemic?! Having to leave my home, friends and family was one of the toughest decisions we had to make. And then arriving to a city where we hardly knew anyone, let alone the city, it was a challenge to say the least. We had to start from the very beginning.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Lily’s Whisk is a woman owned, home based bakery in Vista, but I do offer my services for all of San Diego and surrounding areas. We make cakes, cupcakes, cake pops, French macarons, sugar cookies, tarts, cheesecakes and more. All desserts are customized for each event. And the best part is that everything is made from scratch!

Our business etiquette consists of providing the best ingredients, services and overall experience for each individual client. I am a perfectionist and my own critic, both a blessing and a curse. It all starts with the ingredients. They need to be high quality and fresh. Every dessert that is on my menu has gone through taste tests to make sure it is the best. And for the service that we guarantee? We make sure to always go the extra mile, from providing custom sketches to inspecting each dessert carefully to make sure it looks amazing for the customer at the end.

Don’t forget, the secret ingredient is always love… and butter (lots of it)!

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Do not give up! Yes, it’s scary and a lot of hard work and sacrifice. But the results are just so satisfying. This country needs more small business owners like us. The best advice I can give you is reach out to other entrepreneurs in your area. There are so many encouraging groups out there that just want to see you succeed. I am by no means a business expert, but I would be more than happy to share what has worked and not worked for me. Let’s connect!

Do I have any regrets? Yes, one. I wish I would have started this journey sooner! But I am here now, and I still have bigger plans for Lily’s Whisk.
