Meet Lexi Liebert of Darling & Dapper in Encino

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lexi Liebert.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As a child, one of my favorite things to do was to go to the hardware store with my dad. We’d buy all sorts of tools and materials, which we would bring home to create anything from a two-person scooter to a go-cart; and while school wasn’t my favorite thing, I took advantage of any opportunity to turn a simple project assignment into an excuse to build something totally over-the-top. My lifelong love of crafting and building ultimately led me to attend art school. I went to FIDM and studied visual communications; but after working in that industry for a few years I decided to change career paths and become a preschool teacher, where I put my creativity to use in a whole new way. All the while, I continued to be my family and friends’ go-to person when they needed custom-made party décor, artwork, costumes, etc. Eventually, I decided that as much as I loved teaching, I wanted to take a shot at turning my hobby into my career. The rest is history.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey prior to starting Darling & Dapper was certainly full of ups and downs, both career-wise and personally, but it’s been pretty smooth once I decided to take the plunge. Truthfully, the biggest struggle I faced was finding the courage to take the leap and start the business. It was risking a lot, both financially and career-wise, but I knew in my heart that I needed to at least give it a shot. I give a lot of credit to my friend and business coach, Danielle Dowling. I’m really good at crafting and creating, but I know my limitations…starting a business was far from my field of expertise. I had a vision for the kind of business that I wanted to create, but Danielle was indispensable in helping me set goals for myself, lay the groundwork, and take one step at a time until I ultimately built up Darling & Dapper to what it is today … and I’m not done yet! As I grown, I’d like to take on more large-scale events, and also become people’s go-to person for small projects. My skill-set is really diversified, and because everything is custom-made, I can do so much more than what people see on my website. I’ve done things from making themed name cards and drink coasters for parties, to creating 3-foot-tall Halloween lawn decorations. If you think of a need or have a vision, I am pretty certain I can make it happen, so I am eager for the day when more people realize and take advantage of that.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Darling & Dapper – what should we know?
Darling & Dapper was started as a boutique event design company, but it’s turned into a lot more than that. I create custom decorations, gift baskets, centerpieces, and also put on “craft parties” for groups who have dreams of making a Pinterest-perfect craft, but need some help to get there! (That’s also a really fun activity at a baby shower, birthday luncheon, etc.!) Everything I make is custom-made and tailored to my clients’ visions, needs, budgets, etc. I think what I am most known for is my technical skill. Because of my background in working on large-scale building and art projects, everything I make is crafted to be really high quality. I’m really proud of how far I’ve come/how much my company has grown in less than a year … I only launched last April, and I’ve already expanded my offerings and even have a successful Etsy store, so I’ve been able to reach people across the country.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think my success has really hinged on my drive and my work ethic, as well as my passion for what I do. It’s been quite a journey to see how something I love to do could become “what” I do.
