Meet Lesley Grosvenor of SHEERGEAR in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lesley Grosvenor.

Lesley, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
SHEERGEAR was founded when I realized there was nothing fashion forward in the clear handbag arena (no pun intended). I’m a big Seattle Seahawks fan and was heading to the 2016 season opener against the Rams when I realized halfway there in an Uber that my bag wouldn’t be allowed to come in with me. I panicked and had to turn our ride around to hand my bag off to my mom somewhere off the 134. At that very moment, a light bulb went off and that Monday, the wheels were already in motion to make it happen.

I’ve been in fashion for my entire career–wholesale, retail, styling, etc., but have never designed/manufactured my own line… so I reached out to my friends, turned business partners, Alex Menichini and Ariana Wellington (co-founders of Stadium Chic, a fashion-forward, licensed, apparel brand) and our journey began. Alex found our manufacturer and Ariana and I worked hard to perfect our designs.

By January of 2017, we were at the Sports Licensing and Tailgate Show in Las Vegas selling our product. We had a bit of a slow start but picked up momentum mid football season and landed amazing accounts like the USC Bookstore, Fanatics, and the Dallas Cowboys. We are now in many stores nationwide and have our own website: www.sheergear.com.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The struggles we had, to begin with, are the same struggles we have today–getting buyers (especially male buyers across the nation) to understand the need for a fashion-forward, stadium compliant bag. We’ve been very fortunate to meet amazing people along the way who believe in what we are doing and know that we will retail well.

I’d say for our wholesale business, we have also had a bit of price resistance in some states, but again, have been very successful once we get our foot in the door. Our sales are up 900% from last year so I think we’ve gotten over some of those initial hurdles.

With that said, we have a lot more growing to do and there are multiple major accounts we’d love to be in that haven’t taken the leap yet.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are the most fashion-forward, chic, well made, stadium compliant handbag brand on the market. Our bags are not intended for one-time use. They are meant to be used for multiple events, from concerts to game-day, to every day. Each bag comes with a stadium compliant accessory pouch, as well as a pom-pom in team or fashion colors.

Additional pom poms can be purchased so you can swap it out for whatever the event may be that you are going to. We also use BPA free PVC which no one in our market is doing.

What were you like growing up?
I was always into fashion and had an entrepreneurial spirit. My family had their own business so it was all I really knew!
