Meet Leonelle

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leonelle.

Leonelle, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I knew from a very young age, like 7 years old, that music was my thing. I remember thinking to myself “I’m living the childhood of a pop star.” It gave me my drive and passion but also turned into perfectionism as I got older, which is something I’m always working on, but allows me so much opportunity to get to know me better and grow. I was born in New York and raised in a small-town right outside Columbus, OH. I grew up making my own shows and inviting friends and fam to watch, singing notes I could not reach in my room for hours until I felt I could reach them and traveling around to perform in these entertainment groups. I was obsessed with the 90’s pop era I came up in. People like Britney Spears, Usher, Alicia Keys.. That’s what got me hooked and started. When I was 17 I came out to LA to write with some people for a couple of weeks which lit a fire under my ass. I loved it. I came home, enrolled in college at Miami U where I went for orientation and locked myself in my dorm to sing songs. I hated being there honestly and knew in my gut college wasn’t for me at the time. I decided, with the encouragement of my wise big brother, to move to LA. I’ve been here ever since releasing music, performing and most recently working on my first EP that I’m really super excited about.

I just released the first single off it called “No Pressure” along with the video I creative directed along with good friend and the director, Emmanuelle Pickett, who helped me bring my vision to life. It was the most fun ever and hit over 130k view on my YouTube the first month which was pretty awesome to see. I faced my fear and played dead amongst these big ass waves for hours.. please go watch if anything for this lol. This EP, which I’m almost positive will be titled “grey area” is about the struggles I face with getting out of my own way and finding the grey in life as opposed to what situations in my upbringing taught me to be as “right/wrong” .. “black and white” so the grey, in the middle.. ya know?

I’m currently working on the release and visual of the next single off the EP “wake up from me” produced by the amazing, Christopher “C-ray” Roberts. I CANNOT WAIT. Cannot wait is an understatement. This music is so close to my heart. Releases can be stressful especially as an indie artist doing it all on my own, but it is so fulfilling. I’m learning to stay in the moment and enjoy the journey as opposed to focusing on the finish line.

Has it been a smooth road?
Smooth? Not really. Smooth moments for me are usually in times when I’m able to trust the process and let go. Overall speaking, it takes a lot of self-care, contrary action, patience, persistence and believing in yourself when nobody else does. Or acting as if I believe in myself in times that I don’t. Smooth was when the engine to the 66 mustang I rented for the “no pressure” video started and stopped no kidding like 7-10 times before and throughout the shoot. No biggie though, the majority of the video was in that car lol. I’ve learned life is about being comfortable with the uncomfortable if you’re wanting to grow and do big things.

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
My music is what I call alternative soul. I love soul!! It’s elements of pop, r&b, jazz and some other dark/eerie sounds inside me. I love incorporating musicality and live instruments in my music as well as deep, electronic dramatic vibes. So far I’ve been writing about my own personal experiences, I write a lot about self-reflection and pain, but also overcoming those times. Going through a break up has sparked a whole lot of inspiration for current songs I’m working on. For my writing process, I tend to start stripped down with the guitar or piano then build from there with the producer. Lately I’ve been enjoying writing a lone a lot. I hope you feel connected when you listen to my music.
