Today we’d like to introduce you to Leo Andrei.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I arrived to LA January 1st 2001 from Guatemala. My mom quickly enrolled me in school and although I had a hard time learning English I end up loving this language. But after graduating from high school I wondered around the city experiencing different jobs. Amongst the different things I did I could not find in myself a passion for a specific thing. And years just start to go by until I decided to back to school. But even there I as I started to take classes I felt that a talent was missing in my life. Something unique I could really be good at. I even prayed to God and told Him: I wish I could be good at something. One day I started to feel very itchy about photography and I started watching different photographer channels on YouTube. I had always admire good pictures in Instagram and discovering all these tutorials on video got me obsessed with photography. I cannot even count how many hours I have spent watching great photographers on YouTube. It must me days or even weeks. With a little bit of money in the bank I went on and bought me a small mirror camera and started shooting seascapes. I love the beach and it love going there in my days off to capture cool sunset views and more. I knew then that I would start shooting portraits at one point. After posting a few pictures on Instagram people started to complement my work and that felt pretty good. I really wasn’t sure if this can realistically be a life’s career for me. I took this as a good sign that I was on the right path. And before I started photographing people I wanted to get a good amount of experience. I saw that the best way to earn people’s trust to let me photograph them was by doing my best and posting my best shots in my account. Sincerely it took me months for one of my friends to let me photograph her but when she saw the images she was so pleased with them that I couldn’t resist to ask some of my coworkers too. I’ll be the first one to accept that I’m young in this art, but my obsession with photography and my desire to give to people my best work is great. I can’t see myself stopping any time soon.
Please tell us about your art.
The kind of photography I like to create is the one where people convey their attributes. I like to portrait them in an inspiring way, strong, courageous, intelligent way. I’d like to think that one day when they look back at these pictures, these pictures will inspire them and renew their confidence and hope in life.
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
I think the biggest challenge for every artist is to trust in themselves. People in general are so skillful and capable of so many great things… But for a lot of us it is hard to break out of our shell. We are too afraid of being disliked by most that we discouraged ourselves without ever giving our best effort into what we love to do.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I’m constantly posting my latest work in social media. My Instagram account @fromcub2lion is my main platform at this time.
