Today we’d like to introduce you to Lee Betchley.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Lee. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Like most children, I was fascinated by the notion that others may not perceive or interpret the world as I do. As an adult, I never stopped wondering “do other people see the same green when I say green?” I suppose this and similar questions have prompted my quest to understand diverse human behavior and perception. Is discipline a trait you are born with? Why are some people lucky? And on and on the list went…
My curiosity leads me to seek knowledge in human behavior. As a child and through my young adult life I suffered with insomnia fears and anxieties. I had always believed that if you want to change things in your life you must somehow “do it in your mind”. I just didn’t know how. The truth was I had always been using hypnosis without knowing what it was. At seven I was in the dentist chair visualizing myself at the beach. My dentist was always impressed with my behavior. To this day I have no fears of dentistry.
My desire to further my understanding of human behavior —Why we do what we do— led me to achieve the level of Master Practitioner in Neuro Linguistic Programming. My interest in the ancient path has taken me to Hawai’i to learn the healing and spiritual shamanism of the ancient Kahunas. On the Big Island, I also studied Lucid Dreaming with Dr. Stephen LaBerge Ph.D., the world-renowned expert on Lucid Dreaming.
I have had extensive experience with lucid dreaming and have found it to be life altering. In addition, I have traveled to the Amazon jungle to study with Dr. Luis Eduardo Luna, Ph.D., the current director of the Research Center for the study of Visionary Arts and Consciousness in Florianopolis, Brazil. And while in Brazil, had the pleasure of being introduced to Holotropic Breathwork with Ivania Hassler, the expert in this new method.
Healthy mind and body coaching has been a very natural field for me to fall into as I totally embrace the lifestyle. I have spent hours with top doctors, physical trainers, and interviewed the healthiest people to discover or invent new healthy ways of thinking and to imbue the mind of others with this thinking. Using these many different techniques and learned knowledge, I have been able to assist many with achieving their weight loss and fitness goals.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Yes and no. I think beginning or changing anything can be a struggle. Just by the nature of it being a different animal than what we might be used to. I’m a believer in doing rather than talking. I overcame most of my fears or struggles simply by not focusing on them. I remember I did a lot of extra work at the hypnosis school clinic. The Director told me he didn’t think I “had what it took.” A friend of mine work at Chanel 9 and submitted my name to a reporter. She asked me if I would do a short interview. I agreed. When I asked the School Director if I could use a landline at the school for a contact—he laughed at me. He told me that no one was going to call. I held my own as I rode down the elevator with him and his colleague. Both of them informing me that they had done numerous interviews and rarely got phone calls. They thought it was “cute” that I thought it important.
That night I asked a friend if I could use her office for the taping as I did not want to be at the clinic. The interview was important to me. And that’s what mattered. The story ran at 2pm in the afternoon the next day. It was five-minute story. My cell phone was bombarded with phone messages. The service was unable to save them all. The clinic finally gave me the respect I had really earned from hours of hard work that never got noticed.
Back in the late 90’s/ early 2000’s you could not pay to publish an article. You actually had to write a good article and submit it to thousands of small publications, I spent hours writing and submitting. It was not easy going to a newspaper and pushing your article.
I guess if I think about all those things and surviving ’07, I could say it was not a smooth road. However, it was just typical obstacles that you go through when starting. I really believe that for whatever reason I was meant to be a hypnotherapist and so the Universe, God, Mother Nature (whatever your belief) assisted me as long as I made the effort.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Hypnosis/Hypno-coaching with Lee Betchley CHt – what should we know?
I use hypnosis and coaching for the purpose of vocational and avocational self-improvement Hypnotherapy works by the power of the subconscious mind to change habits and behaviors. The subconscious mind is considered to be the source or root of many of our behaviors, emotions, attitudes and motivations. Hypnosis is a powerful tool for accessing the subconscious mind and crating improvements in our lives.
Hypnotherapy can be an effectively reduce stress and anxiety. It can also assist in “speeding up” the healing process after a break up.
I am considered one of the authorities on working with “weight loss” clients.
I am proud of the fact that I am empathetic to people. Not overly emotional because I don’t think that is helpful. But understanding. Because I have suffered with anxiety, I am able to give clients tools that I myself use. Some not conventional but very effective.
When I first started I dressed down and tried to present myself the way I thought a hypnotherapist “should look”. After a year I thought it best to just be me. And I started attracting the kind of clients I wanted. I see a lot of artistic people. Also, intelligent people who just need a little assistance.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Surround yourself with the people you think are successful in the business you want to be in. I studied Neuro-Linguistic Programming with TRANSWORLD NLP and I would credit my training and my year as a Teaching Assistant for making a major change in my life and also catapulting my career.
The best gift you can give yourself is learning “how you do things”. You can alter your perception.
