Today we’d like to introduce you to Layla McArthur.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Layla. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
One of my closest and best friends got skin cancer when she was in her 30’s and it really prompted me to do my own research. While reading several studies and focusing on doctor’s methods from different parts of the world, who specialize in natural healing alternatives, I learned that there are several things we can do to encourage prevention. It is important to focus on skin health, as it is our largest organ. What we must do is prevent our skin and bodies healthy cells from breaking down. The more I learned, the more I started wondering why it was so hard to find quality skincare, and why there were so many products on the shelf that include ingredients with no benefit, or can even be harmful if used long-term. Why are there still so many horrible things on the shelf? You would have to travel half-way around the world to experience the types of skincare treatments/recipes I was researching. All of the most beneficial ingredients came from the Mediterranean. Places like Greece, Italy, and Brazil. I wanted to make these kind of abundant and nutritional concoctions accessible to my friends and family.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, it has been a long windy road with lots of bumps along the way. Some of the challenges were personal. Being a young single mom after a divorce. Not wanting to miss out on being there. Dealing with trauma and the effects it takes on relationships. Feeling the need to do and be more. Not having any idea how to start was one of struggles. Having family members who don’t understand the hours, blood, sweat, and tears.
They can at times try to discredit you, but I just always felt in my heart I would love to be able to help people feel better. I never really said to myself “I’m going to start a skincare line.” It just evolved slowly and all of a sudden I was just diving in to learn every detail of my business. This included building a brand, creating my own logo, web-sight, labels, marketing tools. My goal was to be hands on, but at times I was overwhelmed. I just wanted to create a skincare where people’s ultimate skin needs would be catered to. Simply. So I kept it simple and was patient.
At the time, I had no idea that the hard times I was going through would ultimately lead me to meeting and working with my husband who developed his own distribution and supply company. He is the kindest, smartest, hardest working man I know. Working with him and getting to include our kids has been the most rewarding feeling. Working through the obstacles, having respect for the people around you and getting to be proud of their hard work and accomplishments is what thriving is. It helps having people in your life that are on the same page. A lot of people who have never had their own business don’t always understand the time and dedication it takes. You can sometimes feel judged for doing things your own way and going against the grain. Too many people don’t have the passion for what they do. We are constantly trying to learn new things so we can be steps ahead and keep evolving with the current times and needs. I would say the most valuable things you can do as a business owner is offer an outstanding product that lives up to the highest standards and take extra good care of quality control. It always comes down to quality, no matter the obstacles.
Umidita – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My company name is Umidita. It is the Italian word for moisture or humidity, I create artisan Mediterranean health treatments for the skin, and specialize in secret anti-aging skin rituals and spa treatments. You can spend a ton going to the spa. This way you get to bring the spa home to you. Quality skincare does not have to be outrageously priced. It just has to be well made. Like healthy food. I am a stickler for ingredients. It has been a blast getting to work with and meet such beautiful colleagues. I am so thankful to glamor queen and celebrity make-up artist, Kandee Johnson for including Umidita in her YouTube video “Summer Must Haves”. She is an angel. She contacted to me out of the blue thorough an email and asked if she could use my product in a video she was creating. I was in shock! It made me feel like I had something very special when many people were doubting my time and money I was investing in myself. It motivated me to ignore my critics. And because I stayed true to my goals, I have had the opportunity to work with so many influential innovators of the arts. I feel very blessed to have been able to assist the people who have let me. I am most proud of my husband and our children. My grandparents, friends and clients who have supported me from the start and in every phase.
Umidita worked hard to raise the bar in professional tattoo care, spreading the word on the importance of maintaining skin health and wellness is very important to me. Self-care is self-love and if you care about your health you should care about your skin. That is why I created Babies First Spa Treatment-“Love In A Bottle”, to create the most nourishing treatment yet, for brand new skin and children. This is a super safe and gentle blend of soothing, natural nutrients that help keep cells healthy. The best thing about Umidita is it works on everyone, whether you have tattoo or not, young or over the hill and everything in between. What truly sets Umidita aside is it exceeds health and safety standards. All of our products are sustainable, vegan, spa grade and cater to all skin types. We encourage natural solutions over synthetic chemicals. The more you know the better you feel. It’s all about you.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I would have to say that for me personally success has always been about who I can inspire and help follow their ultimate goals. Being able to work in context, on my own terms. Staying true to authenticity. Knowing who I am and what I stand for. Success is knowing I have a purpose deeper than the surface and impacting people on a level that sticks with them and changes their outlook for the better. Understanding that struggle is part of success, and that there are no numbers attached. Being patient and having empathy for others, but also myself. Just the feeling of joy knowing I’m trying to make a positive difference for the future. If I can create a feeling of hope in people and they feel more themselves because of that than I am successful.
