Meet Lauryn Rogers of Roots Co. Macrame in Bakersfield

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauryn Rogers.

Lauryn, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My journey with creating macramé art started about a year after having my daughter and started with nothing to do with fiber art. Motherhood had taken over my life, which I was extremely grateful for, but I started to feel as though I had lost myself a little in it. A passion to grow something of my own had started, something that I could share and connect with people over.

I had originally started in creating floral and succulent arrangements for family and friends, and fell in love with it! I began to propagate my own succulents. If you are unaware of the process, you should totally look it up! You take a single leaf from a succulent, let it callus, and with a little love and care roots will start to sprout from the leaf and a new plant will start to grow. The little pink roots that reach into the soil for nourishment were my inspiration for the name of the shop, Roots Co. It was me, reaching to put roots into my community, to make a name for myself and to connect with people. So now you may ask, where the heck did macramé come into play here. After creating several arrangements, I wanted a beautiful way to display them. I searched YouTube for tutorials on how to make my own.

From that first plant hanger, my passion took a complete turn for a different direction. I soon learned that the possibilities with macramé were endless and I was in awe of the beautiful things that could be created. It’s so funny to me how life will throw you curveballs and your future starts to look completely different than you had planned. I am SO grateful for this curveball, I feel I have found my passion, my meditation, my drive to create beautiful things for people. Since then I have had the pleasure of creating beautiful backdrops that I rent out for weddings and events, wall hangings and plant hangers for peoples homes, and statement accessories for my customers to rock on the daily! My earrings have been one of the biggest hits! I have had the pleasure of working with so many other talented vendors in my area to create beautiful styled shoots, and have made so many friends in the process.

I have also learned so much about my self, and have grown so much more than I imagined. I have done all this in the last two years while working a full-time day job, my husband has been working out of state following his dream career, and taking care of our sweet daughter on my own. Did I mention we are now expecting #2?! Many days seem to be a little crazy around here, but with the passion behind it, it makes it all worth it! I am now in a position where I am making more with my macramé business than at my day job and hope to soon make the big move out of state to be with my husband again. I never in a million years thought this would turn into a full-time gig, making enough to support my family. Following my passion has been one of the biggest blessings in this journey, and I can’t wait to see how far it will take me and my family. I hope everyone is able to find this in their own life!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My biggest battles with my business have been my self-doubt in the beginning. I didn’t think what I was creating was ever going to be something people were interested in. I was doing it mostly for myself and was so terrified to share it with the world. I have luckily met some amazing people that have helped push me outside my comfort zone and realize this talent I have to share with the world.

Another struggle would be finding the time daily to make sure I am getting enough content out to my customers. Working full time and taking care of a toddler on my own definitely takes a lot of my time, so there are many late nights around here getting things done.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Roots Co. Macrame – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I am a macramé artist! It took a lot of time for me to finally feel comfortable saying that, but its what I am. I create all kinds of beautiful works of macramé art. I have several macramé backdrops that I have rented out for many weddings and events. They have also been a part of styled shoots with other talented wedding vendors in my area. I think that what I have been most known for is my macramé earrings. They are the #1 seller in my shop and I have made over 1000 pairs in the last year since I’ve been making them! I release them in collections to my website every couple of weeks and they sell out in minutes! They are all hand made by me!

I think one thing that sets me apart from others is my drive to connect with my customers and other entrepreneurs. I love to meet new people, make them feel confident and beautiful, and to inspire them. We are all working our own hustle and I think its such a powerful thing to connect with and support one another. I’m not here to just sell you pretty things, I want to get to know you!

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My biggest plan for the future is to make the big move to Texas to be with my husband again after giving birth to our second baby. He has been there following his own dreams, growing in his career, and being able to provide more for us as a family, while I’ve been here doing the same and taking care of our home, dogs, and child. We have spent most of the last two years apart, while we both have worked to follow our dreams. He is now in the field of work he has always wanted to be in, and my business is now in the financial situation where I can quit my day job and go full time with Roots Co. The hard two years has now provided us the opportunity to have the future we have both dreamed of. He is working in his dream job, and I will now get to take my macramé business full time while getting to stay home with my babies!
