Meet Laurence Segal of Westside Mobile Knife Sharpening in Santa Monica

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laurence Segal.

Laurence, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started making handmade Culinary knives in 1996 and the people that ordered them from me we so impressed with the sharpness that they asked me to please sharpen their other knives.

After doing this for about a year it dawned on me to start charging for sharpening! Duh!

My Wife & I tried a brick & motor store on 4th st and we lasted about 2 1/2 years! We had to sell alot of production knives as well as sharpen and sell my Custom knives as well. Couldn’t sell enough production knives at enough margin to make it really work.

So we closed the store, I bought a new Truck and set it up with all of my equipment so I was a complete Mobile Sharpening Service

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Life always has struggles! You learn the nature of the problem, You Adapt, & over come!

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
There have been many proud moments!

I was written up for my hand made knives & sharpening by the L.A. Times, its on my site. A knife magazine, etc.

But the one that really warmed my heart that comes to mind was when a Private Chef that I had been sharpening for years for, called me to sharpen everything at the home he works at and I had taken my wife to visit her family and wouldn’t be back for about another 12 days.

I started to tell him about another sharpener that I trusted to take care of him and the Chef said,

No Way! I’ll wait for you! I don’t want anyone else touching my knives!

This Chef Cooks & provides for the family & Guests of a person that produces several of the most successful TV shows currently on.

I felt warm & tingly! It really made me feel that my hard work & passion were paying off!
