Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Schwab.
Lauren, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up playing just about every sport you can think of because let’s face it… what else is there to do in Kansas? I mean if you step on a curb… you’re hiking 😉 I stayed in Kansas to play basketball in college, and after that, I followed the yellow brick road from Kansas to California about ten years ago!
When I got to California, I had no clue what I wanted to do with my life. Without sports, I was lost. I didn’t fully realize it at the time, but I had also completely lost my identity because I wasn’t a part of a team anymore. For a while, it felt like I had no purpose, but I knew I wanted to help people. It took me a few years to figure it out, but I finally discovered my WHY.
My why is to facilitate relationships so that we can live in a more connected world. I decided I would do that through fitness because that’s what I know best. It’s been a long journey from leading boot camps on the beach to owning several gyms in the LA area and figuring out what works and what doesn’t work. What I love and don’t love when it comes to the fitness industry.
What I know for sure is that I love bringing people together and creating community and connection! I know that it all starts with our mindset and that we must get right on the inside before we see any changes on the outside.
This is why I finally started my own company, Unplugged Mornings. Unplugged Mornings is a 9-step practice to help you disconnect to reconnect back to SELF! I truly believe that you must give yourself unplugged time in the morning to set the tone for your day and ultimately your life!
My goal is to ensure every person I come into contact with leaves with a bigger smile on their face. I now have the tools to transform challenges, realize visions, and inspire others through my example. As well as help others find freedom of simply being themselves and responding authentically to each moment.
I am combining my passions for health, wellness and helping others to make an impact in this world. I believe in the journey, not the destination and hope that many people will join me on the journey.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been smooth, but most things worth waiting for don’t come easy. I believe our struggles become our strengths and ultimately our stories and I’m very proud of my story! There were different struggles along the journey to where I am today but they all prepared me what I’m doing now so as I look back I’m able to thank the situations and people that contributed to my course correction. For example, I had always dreamed of owning my own gym so you can imagine the joy I felt when this dream became a reality.
Unfortunately, this dream was short lived as I soon realized I didn’t pick partners that aligned with my morals and values. I honestly felt like I was giving away my child when I decided to sell my ownership to my partners and leave something that I had spent every waking hour building for two years. I lost a lot of money and years of my life, but I learned a lot of life lessons and was able to shift my perspective and say that I “picked the perfect partners to teach me the lessons I needed to learn so I could move on and do bigger and better things.”
After selling my ownership in the gyms, I decided I would try corporate for a while to get back on my feet after the “loss.” I became the fitness manager for Equinox Sports Club In West LA! Life has a funny way of planting you in the exact places you need to be to learn the lessons you need to get you ready for the big show aka owning your own business!
I have nothing but thanks for my business partners and Equinox for preparing me for the next chapter in my life but like I said…it wasn’t easy. The road was bumpy, jagged, winding and certainly not a straight shot but I know I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be!
Please tell us about Unplugged Mornings.
I created Unplugged Mornings to help people disconnect to reconnect back to themselves first and then be able to connect with others in a meaningful way. We must first fill our own cups so that we may be able to show up fully for others (friends, family, co-workers).
I’ve created weekly workouts that bring people together to sweat and then connect after at a coffee shop… fully unplugged aka no phones just good old fashion table talk! I also host one-day Unplugged events all over the US! We are currently on tour and have popped up in Nashville, Dallas, Portland and head to Chicago next week!
I hosted the first Unplugged Retreat in Big Sur last weekend, and I’m still having trouble putting it all into words. It was magical! People’s lives were transformed in big ways… including mine! It’s pretty cool when we teach and speak about the things we need most in our lives.
Ultimately I’m creating spaces where people can come together and connect in a meaningful way by training our minds and bodies at these events!
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
All of my favorite childhood memories are with my grandfather! He was more than just a grandpa… he was also a father figure, coach, mentor, and my superhero! He coached me in every sport! From the time I could walk he had a ball in my hand.
When we weren’t playing sports, he would be sitting down with me going over my homework and making sure I was grasping every concept! I contribute my 4.0 GPA in high school and college to his guidance and support!
I also just loved sitting with him on the couch listening to stories about the history of Kansas and watching him do crossword puzzles! He is the smartest & most caring man I’ve ever known!
