Meet Lauren Mones of Fermenting Fairy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Mones.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born into an unconventional household. My mom is gay, and I grew up in a two women household. This is not so unconventional nowadays, but 42 years ago it was! I believe this set the tone for me as a child who never felt like I belonged to any group and who was always different. In fact in high school, I won two titles: 1. Most likely to be friends with everyone 2. Most likely to dance to her own beat

Five years ago, I became the sickest I’ve ever been in my life. I was racing 3-4 triathlons a year when I started to show symptoms of serious illness. It became so severe that I didn’t want to leave my house in fear that I wouldn’t be able to make it to the bathroom in time. And then came the diagnosis of Crohn’s Disease, a supposedly incurable, can be fatal, lifelong disease of the gut. I was confused and devastated. How did I go from racing triathlons to taking heavy steroids and immunosuppressants for the rest of my life?

The doctors told me I would live an average life in and out of hospitals and that food had nothing to do with the activity of the disease, it was incurable. Remember that thread of me dancing to my own beat? I went home and changed everything. I cleaned up my diet, even more, I introduced stress management practices daily, and I ended a toxic romantic relationship.

But the biggest change came from one bite of eating sauerkraut. I felt a surge of energy that I still remember to this day. I knew something big was about to happen. I added various fermented foods to my diet daily. I was feeling so good that I threw away my medications and I’ve never looked back. I dove headfirst into the art of fermentation and making them at home. I played with sauerkraut, kefir, kombucha, kimchi, yogurt. I had a blast and was feeling amazing!

Fours years of experimentation led me to create Fermenting Fairy, a company that is committed to producing the highest quality, nature-driven probiotic foods, and beverages. The healing that I experienced needed to be shared with the world. So here we are!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, and I wouldn’t want it to be. The challenges and obstacles have made me grow and have pushed my boundaries of comfort more than anything in my life. Fermenting Fairy just keeps getting better because of the roadblocks.

One of the biggest lessons is something I will always keep learning. I trust easily. I expect that people keep their word. Well, that doesn’t happen often (it’s actually rare when it does). Instead of losing trust in people, I’ve learned to make written contracts now.

Another lesson is to keep thinking big! When sales drop or that trade show didn’t have the ROI I expected, I can get tunnel vision. I can have a lot of fear around “this is it” or “no one likes our products.” I’ve learned that there is so much more to what is happening in real time. What is happening in real time does not determine the future. I can change that.

Lastly, the pace matters. When I push things faster than they are ready to happen, it tends to fall apart. There is an urgency in the food world. While I believe in making things happen without lag time, I also have learned to go at my own pace, not someone else’s.

Fermenting Fairy – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My company if Fermenting Fairy. Our mission is: To close the gap between humans and nature by offering nature-driven products that embody our less is more, clean is green, high-quality standards thereby making the world a healthier place.

We produce all organic, vegan, gluten and soy free, wildly probiotic foods and beverages. Our products currently are Coconut Milk Kefir, Probiotic Elixer Lemonades, and raw unpasteurized sauerkraut.

I am most proud of the miraculous healing qualities of our products. Everyday, we receive emails, phone calls and messages on how profoundly life-changing these products have been for people. This makes all of the work and sleepless nights worth it! Our competitive edge is driven by our mission.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
It’s easy to get taken by our society’s definition of success which is almost always financial and material. I catch myself falling into that paradigm too.

But really my number one gauge for success is if I’ve helped to change someone’s life for the better. Are my products being of service? Are they adding value to the world? Gratefully, I can answer yes to all of these questions, so I do feel successful.

Personal success for me is waking up and choosing to be in the world in a BIG way. To share my Self no matter how uncomfortable it is or how tired I feel. I choose to do it anyway. And it never fails to bring me back to the Heart.
