Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Fowles.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I’ve always been attracted to art, especially visual art. Whether it is painting, drawing, or photography, I’ve always been mesmerized by images with good composition, interesting color palettes, and captivating subjects. This fascination had an insatiable bent to it that eventually led me to try something first-hand. Over time basic emulation brought competency which gave me the confidence to branch out and search for my own style. To this day I still possess that initial fascination towards good imagery and let it guide what I explore and how I create. I love the fact that ever since I was a little kid, I wanted to be a photographer. I have specific memories talking with neighborhood kids about what we all wanted to be when we grew up. Photographer. That’s what I told them, and that is what I am today.
Please tell us about your art.
I love to photograph people. Experimenting is key for me and I find myself spending time playing with light and shadows to try and create weird images. Most of my best photographs evoke a sense of the darker side, exploring what I find to be dramatic or haunting imagery. I also really enjoy taking photos of wildlife because, with the subject out of my control, I always feel like I’m on the hunt for something special.
Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
I started doing photography on a cheap point-and-shoot camera and some of my most significant photos were taken with it. The act of discovering and exploring the aesthetics for the first time can be all you need to slowly work your way up. The importance of just creating something, without worrying about what equipment you need in the beginning, cannot be overstated. It feels as if money can make things easier for you, but if you’re determined to evolve it will happen with or without financial security.
