Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren DeGracia.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Lauren. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was born and raised in Tustin, CA. In high school, I began photographing weddings, working under various wedding photographers. In college, I branched out to begin my own business, which I operated in a part-time capacity for about eight years. In 2016, I married the love of my life, Jordan, and moved to Los Angeles. After experiencing how it was to be a bride myself, I actually re-structured my photography business to better serve couples and went full-time.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, I wouldn’t exactly call it smooth. It was hard to find my voice as a photographer and a creative, especially in a market that felt oversaturated. In the beginning, I also struggled with confidence. Starting a business is hard work, and it takes time to build momentum. In the first year that I went full time, I booked the least amount of work I ever had. Maybe some of it had to do with relocating, but regardless I wanted to panic, and I wanted to feel like a failure. But deep down, I knew (and my husband would constantly remind me) that I had to keep going, give it my all, and give it time to grow.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Lauren DeGracia Photography – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I am a Wedding & Romance photographer, which means my company basically specializes in photographing “love” (haha) – engagements, elopements, weddings, couples, etc. My vision as a photographer is to curate a space where the joining of two worlds and two lives (i.e., my couples) is celebrated with ingenuity and eloquence. In order to do this well, I build trust, cultivate genuine connection, and identify/encapsulate the celebration points for each of my couples.
I believe that love is a story WORTH telling, and one that we will never finish telling. (I actually have the phrase “Love is a story we will never finish telling” in my Instagram bio, and printed on the backside of my custom thank you cards.) Next, I’m passionate about human connection, and that passion drives me to tell stories; it compels me to celebrate.
Before I am a businesswoman, I’m a passionate photographer. What that means is I don’t treat wedding days like transactions, and I’m not looking to only capture what’s on my client’s shot list. I put my soul into my work. My goal is to truly enter my clients’ world, and emerge with a collection of keepsake moments that celebrate their love for one another in a tangible, beautiful way. Part of the reason I build relationships with my couples is because I recognize that in hiring me, they aren’t just asking me to be present on their wedding day. They are inviting me into a vulnerable, emotional, and intimate day, and one of the biggest moments of their lives as a couple. And I don’t want to capture those moments as a stranger, but rather from a place of familiarity.
I am most proud of my work when the emotions captured in a photo are real enough to make you feel like you’re there, experiencing what my clients are feeling in that moment. You know, when you catch yourself smiling, tearing up, or almost holding your breath because of the wonder, awe, or inspiration that has taken hold of you.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
In the future, I hope to photograph more destination engagement sessions, elopements, and weddings. I hope to know my couples even better, and I aim to continue refining my voice as a photographer and creative in this industry.
