Meet Lauren Baldwin and Khai Dattoli of Maid to Order Mysteries in Burbank

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Baldwin and Khai Dattoli.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Lauren and Khai. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Khai: I have a playwriting background so for some of my friends’ birthday parties, I wrote murder mysteries based on their favorite stories and themes. Lauren often attended these parties and with her background in acting and event planning, she encouraged and helped me develop these mystery parties into a business. After many brainstorming sessions (often while pacing around the Rose Bowl), we began ironing out how exactly to take this to the public.

Lauren: Escape Rooms are so popular here in LA, we talked about combining Escape Room elements with the murder mysteries, creating puzzles and different levels/rooms. Neither of us had ever been to a murder mystery that wasn’t a sit down, eat dinner, watch a show type of affair. We wanted to create an event that people could fully immerse themselves in, they got to be a character and get involved in the story, and possibly even be a murderer…..

Khai: We put on a few “Beta Tests” of different themes and mysteries for our friends and family. From word of mouth and social media, news spread and now we’re having sold out public murder mystery events and requests for private events.

Has it been a smooth road?
Khai: We haven’t seen anyone else doing such customized, immersive murder mysteries so there wasn’t really a model for us to follow. We had a lot of trial and error trying to find the sweet spot of mysteries that gave guests a challenge but weren’t confusing or impossible. Also, our mysteries interweave all of the people/characters in attendance so we have to rely on people showing up and committing to the event. Each event requires a leap of faith in our guests. But our guests are true, dedicated fans of the themes. They show up and often blow us away with how invested they are.

Lauren: Neither of us really has a background in marketing, so we’ve been figuring that out as we go. I think we’re both enjoying learning what works and doesn’t work when it comes to advertising and branding.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Maid to Order Mysteries – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Lauren: We completely customize our mysteries, sending each guest a questionnaire that’s tailored to the theme of the event. We ask questions about how comfortable they are with public speaking, which famous people they most resemble personality-wise and how familiar they are with the theme.

Khai: People usually find these themed questionnaires fun to fill out, but it actually really helps us find what kind of character each guest will have the most fun being.

Lauren: We can also taylor make the theme for the crowd. We’ve been asked to do risque and bawdy style for some events, but also something more conservative and traditional for charity events. We also have some “thief” and “disappearance” mysteries for children’s parties where murder might be a bit too intense.

Khai: Another thing that sets us apart is not only the pop-culture themes but combining multiple themes or elements. For example, we did a 1920s Intergalactic “Bootlegging in Space” murder mystery party. It was a hilarious blast! So pretty much, if someone can imagine in, we can figure out how to make a mystery out of it.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Lauren: People in Los Angeles love to perform and walking down the street in a costume isn’t as shocking here as it might be in other places. People are also very passionate about their fandom’s in LA and it gives us great pleasure to see them go all out for our events.

Khai: LA also provides some incredible venues that fit well with our various themes.
