Today we’d like to introduce you to Laurann Estevez and Chris Smith
Laurann and Chris, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
We met while performing at an event in 2011. At the time, Laurann was working on her Bachelor’s degree in violin performance and Chris was a full time freelance music arranger. We quickly became friends and decided to start our own music business together. Our goal was to always provide people with the highest quality music for events, while being able to keep our repertoire modern and fun. We both worked diligently to find musicians that fit well within the group and started reaching out to clients who would be interested in our services. We consistently work on arranging all of the most current songs heard on the radio today. Over time our goal is to continue increasing our repertoire and overall quality of the group.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Having minimal sales backgrounds at the start, the challenge initially was learning to promote the business. We’ve both learned (and are continually learning) better strategies of more effective ways to present ourselves and have worked hard on accomplishing that over time. We are constantly trying to seek out new opportunities that help promote growth within our business!
Please tell us about OC String Ensemble.
We are primarily a string group that plays for events in the Los Angeles area. We are a group that is constantly fluctuating depending on people’s requests. This means that sometimes we are a standard string quartet, but can also be a trio, duo, a soloist, or any other requested ensemble. We can provide guests with an elegant classical event or we can spice it up with something you’d never think a string ensemble could play! From Bach to Lady Gaga, we are able to play whatever style fits best for every event. We are most proud of always staying true to our core values of providing a high quality and sincere level of music. We strive to leave our guests and clients feeling happy and satisfied after every event. Something that sets us apart from others is that we are both arrangers so when a guest has a special song request, no matter how far out you think it may be for a string ensemble to play, we can write the music and make it come to life.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If we had to start over, we would work more on learning how to protect a business and our music. It’s easy when you are first starting out to try and do favors for people and give things away. There’s nothing wrong with doing that at times, but there is a need to protect your art to avoid it get duplicated or misused. That is definitely something we feel we’ve had to learn.
