Meet Laura Powers of Powers Hour in Burbank

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Powers.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
In 2009, I was in a really bad place; I was physically ill, unemployed, in a bad marriage, and unhappy. Even though everything seemed hopeless, my situation became a catalyst and ultimately helped me to make some pretty drastic changes that transformed my life. I completely changed focus from working in politics and public administration to becoming a professional psychic medium. I dove head-first into this new world and very quickly became the top psychic in my home town, then the top psychic in Denver, and then a well-known psychic in Los Angeles, all in two years. I also published several books, produced a podcast, appeared on television, and started traveling to see clients all over the world. People started to ask me how I accomplished this in such a short amount of time and they asked me for help building or growing their own businesses. I now work as a coach, speaker, and teacher and love helping others transform their lives and businesses. Even if it seems like things are a mess, big, positive change is possibly more quickly than you think.

Has it been a smooth road?
No, there were definitely ups and downs and starting something new is hard. Even if you have fast success, there will be bumps along the road. Even people who have been incredibly successful like Walt Disney had a lot of failure on their path to mega success. Walt Disney had huge failures including enormous financial problems and when Disney Land opened, they were beset with problems. I believe that one of the main differences between those who are successful and those who are not is that those who don’t give up even in the face of incredible adversity make it and not just in a small way.

I also dealt with a lot of people who didn’t understand what I was creating and expected me to “get a real job”. There were always be naysayers but if you hold your vision that you want in your life, work hard, and have patience, your work will pay off. It wasn’t easy leaving my home town and moving to Los Angeles but I knew I had to do it and I don’t regret it at all. I think you have to get uncomfortable and step out of your comfort zone if you want big results. If you aren’t a little bit terrified as you move forward, you probably aren’t growing as fast as you can.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I specialize in helping people start and grow their businesses and work a lot with people that are in fields related to health and healing, the psychic world, and metaphysical. I also help people who are wanting to podcast or write and publish a book. These are pretty specialized areas and I have a lot of experience in all of these areas. I have released 6 books with two more on the way and host 6 podcasts with an audience of over 2.5 million. I also travel all over the world for clients, appearances, and media appointments.

I am very proud of what I have created for myself as an entrepreneur and I love seeing the results that others have in their work and businesses. It’s so satisfying to see people positively change their lives and make a beneficial impact on the world.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I think the Los Angeles area can be a tough place for business but you learn fast and hard here. So, it might feel difficult but you learn faster and can therefore grow faster here as long as you are responsive and pay attention. When you resist things that aren’t working though it can get frustrating. One of my biggest tips for people living in the LA area specifically is to really prioritize what you spend your time and energy on. It can be exhausting just to go from place to place here. While that was challenging initially, this process of streamlining really helps a person to eliminate what they don’t want to make space for what they do. By making these changes, there is less wasted energy and then more energy can be spent on the important stuff. After moving to Los Angeles, I switched my business model to seeing my clients primarily over the phone or skype and that was one of the best business decisions I ever made.

I think the city could do more to encourage people not to get in their cars more. There are so many times when I think people are doing this out of habit and not because they really have to.
