Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Malandrino.
Laura, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born and raised in Venezuela. My father is a Professional Photographer so since very little I was exposed to photography either by traveling with my dad or by been a model. I traveled the world as a model. I studied Advertising and worked for many years in production, as an editor for fashion magazines and later in research and social media. I married a photographer too! and lived in New York for many years. After 2 beautiful kids, I decided to work from home and I left the corporate world to start my business in photography. I started working for Getty Images in NY doing very natural and candid photography of my family and friends. My personal work is mostly documentary photography and everyday moments. I started getting inquiries from my friends and people around me and decided to start shooting for families, moms, kids, newborn, senior portraits, etc. I moved from NY to LA 2 years ago and I kept photographing people and businesses around here.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There is a lot of competition. Almost everybody has a camera and is a photographer these days so you have to be advertising yourself constantly which is something I don’t like to do a lot. I get my clients organically or mostly by word of mouth.
Nomad kid Studio – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a photographer. I love to photograph families and Kids. I follow the little ones until I get the most unexpected expression. I don’t like when people is posing. I try to get very natural looks but I still maintain an editorial style. I work on very clean backgrounds, mostly natural light and clean, neutral colors. I do a lot of portraits too and I work for some fashion brands doing clothes campaigns. I think my experience has been in front of the camera for so many years and working also as a producer gives me a great advantage. I can easily tell which angle will look best in each person and people feel comfortable knowing that no matter what I will find their natural beauty. My work is very relaxed, intimate and peaceful. I like to connect with people and that already makes the whole process more natural and enjoyable.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
When at the end of a shoot I see the work and can’t decide between the best images because I like them all. When the clients are happy and they tell me; “This is the most beautiful picture somebody took of me”. And of course, when somebody refers you.
