Meet Laura Castorina of Blue Eye Search

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Castorina.

Laura, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve been recruiting and career coaching for 6 years now. Before finding my niche, I worked in several industries including hospitality, finance, restaurants and in administrative roles.

Throughout my career, I always found the most joy in interacting with people and letting them know that I cared. I was the Bartender who talked with you about your problems, the Banker who spent way too long opening your checking account because we got lost in deep conversation about your family. Really listening to someone and offering them a word of advice, comfort or support can change someone’s outlook and give them hope. I’m so thankful for the people that have provided that same gift to me.

When the staffing industry found me, I realized that I was able to help people on a whole new level. A person’s career can make or break the quality of someone’s life and that of their family. I grew up with a single, disabled mom who struggled greatly to provide for me despite her very best efforts. I think back to all of the times that her having a steady job could have helped us not only financially, but also as part of my mom’s sense of self-worth and self-esteem.

If I can help someone by actively listening, guiding and assisting them to land a job that they love, in my own small way, I have just helped to improve their life. That’s a huge opportunity! This idea motivates me and helps me to keep it all in perspective during challenging times.

I never, ever thought that I would own my own business. It was the farthest thought from my mind when I began talking with Matt about his business model. My husband John recognized the value of this opportunity and encouraged me to believe that I could do it.

He’s a great partner in this life and supports me as I move through the ups and downs of this funky adventure.

Owning your own business is a unique experience that allows you see inside yourself like few things can. I love what I do and that my work contributes to something much bigger than me. I appreciate the heck out of this journey and am honored to have the opportunity to improve my family’s life and the lives of others along the way. I knew that following this path was right, so I dove in and earned my degree in Human Resource Management at night while I continued to hone my craft during the workday.

After I relocated my family to Arizona in 2017, I began working remotely with Marius Group and have happily partnered with them to create my own recruiting firm, Blue Eye Search. This new adventure has allowed me to work with some of the most innovative companies and the finest talent in the tech and software industries. I will be expanding to include companies in hospitality and finance since these industries are also close to my heart.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t think that many things in life worth doing are smooth. I feel like my greatest growth happens when I’m punching and praying my way through the weeds.

As a fledgling entrepreneur, I am amazed, delighted and sometimes totally freaked out about the things I’ve learned about myself in this short period of time. Owning your own business is a unique experience that allows you see inside yourself like few things can.

I’m learning brand new lessons in perseverance, a positive mindset and bouncing back quickly from disappointments. Thanks to Matt, I’ve also learned that challenges and defeats can be our greatest lessons and we should view them as allies towards victory.

Please tell us about Blue Eye Search.
With my company, Blue Eye Search, I specialize in matching exceptional talent with phenomenal startup and mid-sized companies. My areas of expertise include all levels of Software Engineers (Mobile, Full-Stack, Front-End, Back-End) Quality Test Engineers, Project and Product Managers, Solutions Engineers, Marketing and Sales Professionals, Data Analysts and Leadership.

I strive to deeply understand the needs of my clients and candidates and make the journey meaningful and painless along the way. When I’m helping a job hunter make a career change, I get to know my candidate on a personal level. I really try to understand the whole person and what they need and want. If I know what is truly important to someone, then I can help make that transition smooth and purposeful for them.

When I’m working with Hiring Managers, their needs are a little different, but the personal connection with them is just as important. I work to completely understand my client’s business needs and goals, the company’s culture and the fine details of the role.

By having these conversations I help my clients define who and what they’re looking for and then I find that person for them. That takes a lot of open, clear communication and if you do that right, over time, you build trust on both sides. For me, that’s the only way I see a partnership working.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Playing in my Grandma’s backyard with my cousins. We helped garden, tried to feed each other terrible concoctions made from leaves and mud and spent long days playing dress up and acting out our favorite books like Island of the Blue Dolphins and Anne of Green Gables. My Mom and Grandma would bring out Kool-aid and little sandwiches.

We stayed out there the entire day and grumbled when we had to put on sweaters in the evening and finally come inside. It was like magic.
