Today we’d like to introduce you to Latrice McGlothin.
Latrice, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In speaking to my mother, I was singing and performing at a very early age. She tells the story of how she brought me a toy record player with a microphone and a record with more than 50 “silly songs”. The toy was a blessing in the sense that it kept me busy but, a curse because I learned every one of the songs and would sing them nonstop.
My father managed the marketing and sales team for WNOW radio in Milwaukee, WI so, I grew up listening to a diverse collection of music and would spend countless hours with him, listening to performers such as Mahalia Jackson, Wes Montgomery, Prince, Nancy Wilson, Barbara Streisand, Minnie Ripperton and the Bee Gees.
The power of music is amazing and I decided to become an artist myself while listening to Stevie Wonder’s song “Ngiculela – Es Una Historia – I Am Singing”, I was so taken that the languages held their conviction and meaning even though I could not understand most of the words, This experience inspired me to want to bring love, change and healing to the lives of others through music.
Throughout my education, I was involved in numerous choirs and small groups that performed many genres of music and I respected and embraced them all earning me the nickname “Jukebox”.
My college study began at Howard University in Musical Theatre and after a series of life lessons, I found myself across the country in California where I finished school with my a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with an emphasis in Acting from Cal State University Long Beach. After school, I was sidetracked by life as I worked in theater, conducted a gospel choir and maintained a day job in banking for years.
Fast forward to my first CD, (a collection of Jazz covers) entitled “A Breath of Fresh Air”. The purpose of the work was to give audiences a moment to reflect on good memories.
My feeling was that “Music today offers so many versions of love; I wanted to provide an alternative that could be shared without offense”, One of my goals is to inspire others to take risks and step out on faith to make their dreams come true. Which was advise that I had to take myself.
For my second project, I was convinced by my husband Larry and music mentor Michael Nash (Rose Royce) to write and produce my own music. October 2017 marked the date of my sophomore release, “It’s Time!”, a soul/r&b body of work that encourages my listeners to consider their lives and take action now.
In the works now is an inspirational EP, I am very excited about the work and can’t wait to share it.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has certainly not been smooth as life’s challenges have slowed me down and sometimes even stopped me in my tracks.
My demeanor has always been happy, upbeat and trusting, this view was rocked as I was molested and assaulted as a youth which left me angry, vulnerable and reeling for answers. I used singing, acting and cheerleading as ways for escape.
Another struggle was trying to figure out what path to take after my first CD did not climb the charts the way that I had envisioned when making it. The expectations were very high but the strategy and results needed refinement.
The final struggle was becoming a Caregiver for my father in his last years with us. It was incredibly hard to watch someone you love that had been so strong and focused aging, and heartbreaking to see the transformation and devastation that can deplete the body.
With each obstacle, it was music that helped me bounce back, heal and move forward.
