Meet LaTresa Harris of LaTresa’s Creations in Lancaster

Today we’d like to introduce you to LaTresa Harris.

Thanks for sharing your story with us LaTresa. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was born in Alexandria, Louisiana. I’ve lived in California since the age of two. I grew up in Carson, CA. And as a little girl, I always loved fashion. It was always my dream and passion. I would spend my days alone in my room creating mood and vision boards out of magazine cut-outs. and at that time, I had no idea what they were called. I loved to alter my clothes to my desired taste, Create clothes for my dolls and create various hair styles to go with the look. I loved to do hair as well, I would do family and friend’s hair all the time. But my passion has always been Designing. I knew when I got older, I would be a Fashion designer. But I wanted to do more than that I wanted to be an image consultant.

At the age of 16 while in high school, I became pregnant with my daughter. As a single mother, I continued school and graduate with honors. After high school, I enrolled in La Trade tech fashion design program to pursue my career in fashion. I only completed one year because I got married at 18. and moved to the Antelope Valley. My life had changed dramatically I became a mother of seven. I have five girls and two boys and I devoted my life to them to ensure their lives would be the best they could be. Although I was married, I was a single mom. Because my husband was in and out of jail and had is addiction problem. My dreams seemed to be lost. But my faith in God kept me. Even though I was busy being a wife and mother I did go to cosmetology school and obtained my license and worked doing hair. The nearest Fashion design school was too far from where I lived to be able to be home when my kids returned from school. But I was very productive In my craft. I started my business during this time. Sewing prom dresses for my girls and their friends and doing their hair. I also sewed choir dresses for my daughter’s high school choir.

I made outfits for our church praise dance team and costumes for the church plays. I would make anything from pillows, curtains, halloween costumes, custom Birthday/wedding gowns outfits for up and coming artist, dog fashion, etc. If someone asked I would do it. But in the midst of all this, I went to school to become a realtor. I love helping people purchase their new home. But my love is fashion I really love the feel of fabric. I can just wrap-up in it and play in the mirror envisioning my next creation. My business is mostly women’s fashion; Evening gowns, Dresses , skirts, custom t-shirts and much more. I love to complete a women’s look. I love to makeover women from head to toe. Because when you look good, you feel good. and this helps build the confidence that a lot of women need especially if they are a mother. Sometimes we make sure our children are looking good but start to lose ourselves. I am now a grandmother of 11 with one on the way. As my family has grown I still wanted to get my degree in Fashion Design. So I am now in school getting my BA in Fashion Design. Because I would like to one day open a school to teach young children to design and sew. I believe you are never too young to start perfecting your skill, because in those years you are so creative and I would love to see children bring to life what they envision.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No things have never been easy. Pushing through raising seven children while being in an unstable marriage only my Faith got me through it all.
