Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenesie Tyler.
Jenesie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Well, let me take you back to 86. I was ten. My parents owned a small cosmetics store called Gigi’s cosmetics (named after me by the way, Gigi is my nickname ) they use to take me to work with them and well what else would a ten years old girl do in a store full of makeup? Play with Makeup of course. Fast forward to 1999, I still love makeup and wanted to work for one of the hottest lines at the time M.A.C. They were so polished in all black with perfectly painted faces. I knew I wanted to be a makeup artist and if I wanted to be respected as an artist, I had to work for M.A.C. So I tried to get in and failed. I didn’t have enough experience. So I went to work for another line to gain some retail experience. In a year, I went back and tried again.
Made it through five interviews and got in. I stayed with the company for about six years, learned tons from a lot of talented artists. I got to do tons of fun things but felt like it was time to move on. I was starting to do a lot of work on photo shoots, music videos and staying in retail was holding me back. I decided to leave and was able to do lots of fun industry stuff. NY fashion week, work with different celebs on different music videos and some reality tv work. It was a great experience. I Had also started to teach makeup at local cosmetology schools and I just loved it. I could never get enough beauty! I love it so much, the products the people. What a great job… talk about makeup, products, the industry! Show others who loved it as much as I did how to do it….it was perfect. Beauty has always been my passion. Makeup, Skin, permanent makeup…I always love learning!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
When I was younger, I would say yes it was a pretty smooth road. I saw what I wanted and I would just do it. It was easy to jump and not have fear of failing. As I got older and had more responsibilities, It was harder for me to just go for it. I was scared. I had a family, babies, and bills to pay. What if it didn’t pan out? How would I pay my bills? There was a time I had to put everything on hold. My mother had died suddenly and I had to take care of my father who was dying of cancer. After I went back to work in the retail world, I had a bad back injury that left me pretty much bedridden for two years before I had surgery. Took me a minute to find my way through that rough patch but with the help of my family and close friends I did and I found my passion again.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Lash Wardrobe is the name of the company. We specialize in 3d mink lashes and lash boxes to hold your Lash Wardrobe. Lash Wardrobe was born because as an artist, I use to always customize lashes for clients. I decided I was tired of cutting up different eyelashes to create the looks that I wanted, so I was going to make my own lash line. I wanted them to be fluffy, layered and look luxurious but feel comfortable while wearing them. I wanted them to be at a more affordable price for the quality of the lash. I wanted quality handmade lashes at a decent price point. My parents had their own business. All my life I worked in retail, I know how to do this I’m going to create my own line.
So I did!! I designed the lashes I was looking for and had the samples made up (this is the short version of this process by the way). I gave the samples to a bunch of young artist and girls who love lashes. Got great feedback so I decided I was going to go all in. I wasn’t going to be scared, I was just going to do this. I knew where I wanted to start to sell my lashes. A local California company called Planet Beauty. The stores remind me so much of my parent’s store that I grew up in. It had such a great vibe, they had lots of fun brands. Big and small, old and up and coming, I just knew I wanted to be in there. So I reached out and well (short version again) Lash Wardrobe is being tested in 2 of the Planet Beauty stores. We hope to grow with the company and be all over California.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Well tons of people in my life deserve credit for the woman and businesswoman I have become. First off, my immigrant parents who showed me so much I could not begin to tell you. They taught me how to be innovative, to get things done even if I didn’t have the resources. The work ethic was insane. I hated having to go to the store with them all the time as a kid it was boring (no iPhones or iPads to keep me busy, I lived in ancient times ) but that’s how I learned so much! Just watching them . My group of artist bffs who I have known for almost 20 years! They are my biggest cheerleaders. I trust them with my life so if they like it then I love it. My cousin who has been a product junkie with me since we were young girls!
We talk daily about new products, new discoveries, loves, hates and wishes! She always keeps it 100 whether it’s my product or a billion dollar company. We can be brutal lol. My Husband and my family who support my crazy ideas and hours! They give mommy all the unconditional love. In the industry, I love seeing companies that I remember the owner walking around the Nordstrom floor selling the one product they had turned into a billion dollar company like Too Faced. It’s inspiring because I know where he started and how hard he worked to get where he is. All these people are a factor in my success and inspiration.
