Today we’d like to introduce you to LaQuinta Magwood.
Thanks for sharing your story with us LaQuinta. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was born in Charleston, South Carolina and raised in the small town of Walterboro, South Carolina. I am a twin and the youngest of five children. My journey to becoming a business owner and a stylist goes back to my childhood. Growing up, I would always get my hair braided by my oldest sister but it was so tight that I would cry and complain. I hated her jerking my head because she was mad she had to do my hair. When my parents could afford to, they started sending us (myself and my twin sister) to the salon. It was during those hard times that I began to do my own hair. Everyone complimented me which only boosted my confidence to the point where I began braiding and styling other people’s hair. Fast forward to my first semester in college, where I took my passion for doing hair and my need for cash to make braiding my side hustle between studies.
I have been braiding hair for over two decades but the funny thing is I didn’t want anything to do with hair anymore after landing a great paying job in corporate America. I had a lot of people tell me I could continue braiding on the side and I tried but that became too much once I was promoted to a leadership position. This promotion was what I hoped for; unfortunately this company didn’t have my best interest at heart. I was a top-ranking night shift supervisor and had one of the best teams. We were a work family. Due to my stats, it allowed me to bid for an earlier shift, which I got. Shortly after getting my new team all hell broke loose. I was told I wasn’t a great leader and I would never be able to lead my team to greatness. A few months later, I was terminated via phone call and that was the very day that I began my personal Sisterlocks ™ journey. Call me crazy but that had to be Fate! Why you might ask? I would usually be upset for losing a job that I invested so much of my time in but I had this huge sense of peace. I got in my prayer closet and cried out to God asking him to please help me find my purpose and he leads me to cosmetology school.
I will never forget how I met the owner and director of the cosmetology school I attended. I had an old friend that told me about this wonderful lady by the name of Regina Benton. She spoke so highly of her that I had to reach out. When I contacted her, she set up a tour of the school and I took my mom along. When we entered the school my mom and I smiled and said, “This is it!” It was something about the way we said it that just made it feel so right. After speaking with Mrs. Gina during my tour, I was wondering how I would afford to pay for school. Luckily my mom is a woman of faith and she reminded me, “ God has ALWAYS provided and we will get the money!” We got the money and I began my journey in October of 2018. While in school, I grew close to a classmate and we talked about or goals after graduation. She suggested I reach out to someone she knew and that’s how I met the most amazing woman, Marandan Ferguson. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do after school until we had a salon social and one of the ladies said, “You can’t open up a hair salon straight out of hair school.” I saw this as a challenge and anyone that really knows me knows that I love a challenge. I contacted Marandan and told her I wanted to do something crazy. I wanted to open up a salon right out of school. She told me that wasn’t crazy and encouraged me to select a grand opening date.
At that moment, I immediately hired her as my business coach and set a date to open up my salon. I chose January 25th, 2020 as the official grand opening. Some time went by and we began looking for a location. I received so many no’s that I started to get discouraged. Marandan wasn’t having it. She gave me five minutes to cry, scream, and vent before moving on. The next morning she remembered a lady she rented from over two years ago. Marandan went back through those messages to find a specific message detailing a location the woman had available. She reached out to see if this space was still available and it was! We immediately set up an appointment to view the space. It was a large space but it was filled with stuff. It felt right so I said yes to the location. I will say that because I took my business serious and hired a coach it helped me get to where I am today. I met all my goals and opened my salon on the original date I set!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As you can tell, my journey was far from easy! I lost my grandmother around the same time I lost my job. I had to overcome many obstacles that made me stronger and more determined to achieve my goals. I had a nephew that was having trouble in school and it required me to leave school in order to raise him. This sacrifice caused me to finish school later than I hoped, but it was well worth it. I had an instructor who pushed me and didn’t cut any slack. It was stressful but it pushed me even harder to go after my goals. The biggest struggle I endured was financially. While I was in school full time I was taking certification courses to set me apart therefore I couldn’t work. With the help of my twin sister, parents, and friends I was able to make it through.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Say La V Beauty is a full-service multi-cultural salon. I am currently the top stylist as well as owner. I offer a large variety of services from Micro link extensions, braids, make-up, color services, and more. I specialize in natural healthy hair which include, Sisterlocks ™, Brother locks, Traditional locks, natural treatments, and blowouts. I even offer Mommy and Me Transformations, which are among my favorites. I am proud of all my clients’ transformations and the genuine love and support given and received. They leave my salon-inspired and ready to make their mark on the world. Since being open, I’ve had many clients that have started their own business and I’ve been able to share the ups and downs of my journey with them. This makes my heart smile. What sets me apart from others is I don’t limit myself to one specific service. I constantly work on learning and perfecting multiple services in order to stay up on the latest trends.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was very spoiled and I insisted on following my late grandmother around. I simply enjoyed the company of older people. My grandmother worked at a hair salon and I loved spending my time at the salon singing and listening to the women share their journey and the latest gossip. What I enjoyed most was seeing the transformation of the clients that sparked my interest.
