Today we’d like to introduce you to LaQueita Antionette.
LaQueita, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’d say my passion for fashion started early. I’m a preacher’s kid so my parents always coordinated and made sure I was fly. I was the only child and some may argue that I was spoiled lol, but I just loved clothes! I always wanted the latest styles and trends. I went through so many fashion phases. Fast forward to college, I was a business major and I didn’t know my school Northwood University had a fashion program, People always asked me if I was apart of the Fashion Merchandising program. Sadly I wasn’t as confident in that being my source of income because I was raised to get an education and climb the “corporate ladder”. My friends and colleagues would always ask me to take them shopping. At first, it was a hobby and then I realized, wow, I can make this into a side hustle! I partnered with my childhood best friend who is a makeup artist and we started doing photoshoots and fashion shows all over the Dallas/ Fort Worth area. Eventually, the 9-5 life bored me, I was so unhappy and wanted more. I remember being laid off from my corporate job and literally decided that when my lease was up, I was moving to Los Angeles to follow my dreams of becoming a wardrobe stylist.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Absolutely not! Initially, I only knew one person when I moved to LA and no clue where to start in this industry, I struggled networking and building my clientele which landed me right back into a corporate job I hated. Fear and self-doubt crippled me and made me question if I had made the right choice moving to this city. I second-guessed myself as a stylist. My first year here, I pulled away from styling because I was working two jobs to support myself because Cali bills hit different! Lol Building genuine relationships in this city was an emotional roller coaster because it was hard to tell who was there for you or just out to use you for their own benefit. I remember calling my mother in tears because I felt like a failure. She prayed over me and told me to leave it all in God’s hands and to have faith that he didn’t bring me this far to leave me.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Let LA Style You – what should we know?
LET L.A. STYLE YOU is my baby, my brand. Funny story my friends back home called me L.A, (LaQueita Antionette) but when I came out here people started calling me La so I kept it. I’m a wardrobe stylist, personal shopper, and now I’ve dived into creative directing! I specialize in helping others find their fashion match. Whether you need looks for a photoshoot, music video or special event; I’ve got you covered. I love pushing the envelope in fashion and making people step out their comfort zone. What I’m most proud of is my journey as a whole. I’m just a kid from Dallas, TX who took a leap of faith and God has been carrying me every step of the way. I’ve come so far in these last 4 (almost 5) years! What sets me apart from others is my PASSION. Money is great but it’s not why I’m a wardrobe stylist. Fashion is my art and I treat my clients like a canvas. I love how wardrobe can change a persons mood, posture and confidence. When you look good you feel good! I love seeing the look on my client’s face when the look is complete. Wardrobe never feels like “work”! I can do this all day! It makes my heart happy!
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
God deserves all the credit! I wouldn’t be here without him. I’d also have to say my parents. Once they gave me their blessing to move here, I knew I’d be okay. My organization S.I.S.T.A.S. mentored me and shaped me into the woman I am today. My Godmother who took me under her wing at a very young age. My tribe (Grammy Kammy, Captivating Cora, and The Homegirl Therapist) have been my Texas Cheerleaders. We push each other everyday to be the best version of ourselves. I truly love you ladies. My friend Terrica who is also a Texas native. I met her when I interned at LA Fashion Week and we’ve been partners in crime ever since. She pushes me to be a Boss Babe! My good friend Stacey who literally knows this industry inside and out and has been there to encourage me and uplift me. She has taught me so much. To my dear friend and creative director Luckie. He literally opened so many doors for me when he brought me on as wardrobe stylist for many of his music videos/projects. Through him, I met Qveen Herby who trusted me to style her for the American Music Awards and three music videos (Alone, BDE, and Mozart) which have over a million views on YouTube!
