Today we’d like to introduce you to Landi Maduro.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Landi. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My intrigue for photography began, like most, when I was a kid. My father was a photographer as a supplement to his career as an art teacher. I would stare at the candid photos he took of my mother and hung in our garage, which was his makeshift studio. I loved how he froze a moment with the camera that the naked eye might have missed. My affinity for photography and film grew when I started modeling and acting. To see a model transformed from a regular person to a piece of art amazed me. I no longer wanted to be the art; I wanted to create it. Although I like shooting still life my favorite thing to shoot is people. I love to capture a feeling or a moment in a person’s eyes and display it for others to define. If you look at a photo I took or a film that I directed and it makes you feel sad or makes you smile, then I have done my job well.
I’ve always loved helping people. I think that came from being the eldest and always being responsible for my two younger siblings. My mom took in foster kids, or any kid for that matter, who needed a place to stay or a good meal and so the spirit of giving became rooted in me. It is why when I did my documentary, The Silent Killer: Prostate Cancer In The African American Community, I reached out to nonprofit organizations to start men’s health fairs where we could educate men about prostate cancer and do on-site PSA testing. It is why I started the Women of Color Filmmakers group to give female filmmakers an opportunity to network and learn the ends and outs of the entertainment industry so they can stand next to the male counterparts with a foundation of knowledge and confidence.
When I started my production company Bluechild Entertainment in 2012, I just wanted to do great photography and video work for my clients and maybe do a film here or there. I never imagined turning it into a platform that could help other filmmakers, actors and photographers. I feel fortunate to be able to be in a position to help others being it through the documentary or the classes and workshops my company provides. My goal is to get to a level where my company can provide grants to female filmmakers and photographers. I believe with a little hard work, I will be able to do that soon.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road. In fact, there have been days when I’ve asked myself, “What are you doing and why are you doing this? There were times when I wasn’t sure how I could pay my bills because I hadn’t booked a job and no matter how many jobs I bid on or marketing calls I made nothing seemed to work. Sure, I got discouraged and thought I should give up and get a regular job. When I start to think like that, I have to remind myself that nothing feels better than the smile on a client’s face when they thought they were photogenic and then they see the photos or video from their shoot. The times that I have been able to get out of my head about what I don’t have what I needed has been provided for me. I know that may sound crazy but I truly believe you bring about what you think about and the more I stay positive the more my business grows.
We’d love to hear more about your business.

What were you like growing up?
I was an active kid. Always playing make-believe. I loved to play school and line up my stuffed animals and dolls as my students even before I could read. I loved entertaining my parents and their friend either with a skit that I wrote or with my own version of Star Search.
