Today we’d like to introduce you to Lance Witmer.
Hi Lance, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born and raised in a quaint little town in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. From the time I first laid hands on a camcorder in the 7th grade, I knew that video was a passion I could pursue for the rest of my life. I began filming recreations of my favorite movies, which frequently required me wearing multiple hats in order to complete. In 2017, I moved to Los Angeles to complete my BFA in Cinema at Columbia College Hollywood.
While there, I wrote and directed a Viking short film, “Halfdanr,” which is currently making its way through the film festival circuit. 2017 is also the year I founded Valor Films, a production company with the mission to inspire integrity, nobility and justice. All my life films have inspired me, sparking my imagination. Epic adventures such as Lord of the Rings, Gladiator and Braveheart remain as some of my favorite stories. I believe a story can change the world. It is for this reason Valor Films exists.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Of course, it has been a challenging road full of hurdles and pitfalls. Lancaster County, despite all its beauty and beautiful people, is not an easy place to make entry into the film industry from. The first and immediate challenge I faced was a roughly 3,000 mile move across the country. Then there was the culture shock. Believe it or not, “Amish Country” and Los Angeles are not very similar. All of the social norms and the general temperament were radically different. It helped immensely when I found some friends who were also “transplants” to LA. Personal journey aside, manifesting the idea of Valor Films has not been an easy task. Like any start-up, there are significant upfront expenses and an immediate need for clients. Having left almost all of my community connections on the other side of the country, it has been a constant hustle to create brand awareness. This is the simple reality when you’re starting from the bottom. You need three things to create the momentum required to stay afloat: assets, clients, and a track record. No matter what quantity, you cannot begin to build momentum until you have some quantity of each of those key elements. Acquiring them from nothing requires an insane amount of two things: Perseverance and Sweat Equity. It has taken years, and the demand for perseverance and sweat equity is still high, but at this point Valor films is beginning to build some momentum with those three key elements.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Valor Films is an independent, full-service video production company. Whether it’s commercials, ads, narrative films, documentary, fashion or a music video you need, we are eager to help you bring your vision to life. We offer everything from ideation through post-production, as well as the ability to bring our expertise to any specific portion of an existing project. We even branch into photography. No matter how big or small your content needs, your solution can be found at Valor Films.
What were you like growing up?
I have always been intensely creative, energetic and easy to get along with. I have always loved people and loved being around others. I played little league baseball, football from fourth grade through high school, and ultimate frisbee. Fishing, hiking, camping and pretty much anything that got me into the woods or mountains has always excited me.
