Meet Lan Nguyen of Lan Nguyen Photography in Westwood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lan Nguyen.

Lan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have been doing photography as a hobby for 10 years. I started out with a point-and-shoot camera when I was 11 years old and took the camera everywhere I went to capture moments in time. Shortly after, I found a love for the punk/alternative music scene and started doing music photography. I started a music blog where I interviewed artists and photographed concerts, and later attended the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University with hopes of becoming a music journalist. I took a photojournalism class taught by a Pulitzer-Prize winning photographer, and expanded my love of photography from solely concerts to photographing people and genuine emotion. I then started my photography business as a side gig to earn money throughout college. During my time at Northwestern, I discovered a passion toward social justice and education, and changed my career path toward working on advocating for low income youth. Now, I am attending graduate school at UCLA and am working toward getting my Masters in Social Welfare. I am continuing to do photography on the side, and love capturing emotion through portraits, couple’s photography, and wedding photography. My favorite photo sessions are those in natural environments that combine people’s beauty with the beauty of nature.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has been challenging to balance photography with schoolwork. Running a photography business involves not just honing your art — it involves marketing, client communication, professional development, and long-term planning. It’s something that takes full-time commitment to develop, but as a student, I had to balance my business alongside with my academics and extracurricular involvement. I’ve gotten really good at time management, and am grateful to have had this business to allow me to explore my passion on the side while in school.

So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Lan Nguyen Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a one-woman photographer, but often work alongside my partner, Bryan Huebner, as my second shooter. I do individual and couples portraits, engagement photography, and weddings. I love photographing civil ceremonies or elopements, because I think that all marriage ceremonies are beautiful in their own way, and deserve to be captured. My style involves photographing people in natural light among plants, which really adds emotion to the images.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I don’t see my business changing much; I plan on continuing to do sessions a few times a month while working toward my Master’s degree. I am excited to continue learning and further honing my skills in photography and can’t wait to see who I get to work with next!
