Today we’d like to introduce you to LaKeisha McGee.
LaKeisha, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Can you imagine resigning from your job of almost 20 years, pulling down your pension, and selling all your assets to start over with nothing. Well, that’s just what I did! I relocated to Los Angeles five years ago from Chicago after a divorce, to allow my daughter to follow her dreams. I had three of my four children with me. My youngest son took a leave from what would’ve been his last year of college to come assist us.
When we arrived in LA , I only knew one person and I was jobless, but by the grace of Yahweh I did have an apartment. It was a total faith walk! For the first year, things were good. I was able to be a momager and sustain my family financially. Then life hit me with a diagnosis of breast cancer. I’ve had some highs, but the lows are what defined me and my mission to help others. This was the first life threatening illness I had ever faced.
My journey with cancer opened my heart and my eyes to the needs of those facing similar situations in our communities. I have been a social worker for over 20 years and within the last couple of years, I became a life coach. Through the years, I have noticed that we as a people struggle to heal because we make choices to hold on to things that keep us bound and afflicted. My passion has always been to help people learn how to grow and heal with the proper techniques.
Has it been a smooth road?
Things began to get rocky and we became homeless. We slept in our truck, hotels and Airbnb’s to survive. Only a handful of people knew what was going on. We got back on our feet and then I got sick. I was diagnosed with stage 2 Her2 +/ER+/PR+ breast cancer. What a devastating blow it was to just be getting back on top of my business only to be dealt this hand. During that process, Yahweh showed me so much favor that my heart just wanted to help others that were going through similar hardships.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
LA is like a double-headed sword. It’s a city that stretches you, It’s difficult to make connections yet it’s all about who you know! On the other hand, once you get started with your business and display you’re level of expertise the people trust you and the doors open up. LA is very contrasting to home. Chicago is a community city everybody knows and supports each other. LA isn’t quite as inviting to non-natives at first, but I’m sure natives would beg to differ.
