Today we’d like to introduce you to Katrina Birkholm.
Katrina , please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I attended the International school of beauty and aesthetics in Honolulu. Shortly after I started working for MAC Cosmetics, Working as an artist for MAC I was able to do makeup for women of all ethnicities and ages in both Hawaii and the Los Angeles. I have been an in-store artist for both Giorgio Armani and Christian Dior. In 2015 I was chosen with twenty other artists to compete to be a Diorshow artist in New York City. I have had much success over the years with weddings, print and web work for companies such as Ella Moss, Paige Denim, Nordstrom, One Stop Studios, Splendid, Goddis Knits and Acacia Swimwear.
Has it been a smooth road?
I have had many successes in different areas of the beauty industry. I believe we all have times of struggle, that is just part of life. Knowing your goals and continuing to strive for them is what is important.
Any predictions for the industry over the next few years?
I believe that as a society we are moving into a time of offering services such as makeup in a more intimate setting. Where artists have the ability to come to you in the comfort of your own home, office etc. I also believe we are more aware of what we are putting on and in our body. I believe makeup is going to continue to move in this direction of implementing more skincare into products along with the focus of products containing natural ingredients that are beneficial for the skin and body both inside and out.
What would you say has been the biggest challenge for you over the course of your career?
For me, the biggest challenge has been balancing a full-time retail position and freelancing. This last year I have chosen to focus primarily on offering my services on a freelance level on a full-time basis. I am also currently seeking representation with a makeup agency in the Los Angeles area.
What advice do you wish to give to those thinking about pursuing a path similar to yours?
Keep updated on the latest beauty trends. It’s important to talk with fellow makeup artists on how they have got their start in the industry. Outreach and offer your services to everyone you meet. Word of mouth is key!
