Meet Kyrsten V. Williams of Da Funki Eye Clothing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyrsten V. Williams.

Hi Kyrsten V., thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Faith, Family, Fun, and Fashion have been the things that drive who I am and how I survive. My gift of being a triple threat; as they call it (actress, singer, and dancer), is my foundation. I have been performing since the young age of four and have been blessed to continue to pursue my dreams as an actress on camera and on stage. Skipping two grades in elementary school allowed me to start high school at 12 years old and go on to attend Columbia College Chicago at 16 years old, where I am now an Alum with my B.F.A in Acting-Theatre. Being the youngest in a new city with no family never scared me because I saw it as an opportunity to exercise my gifts and have FUN!! In Chicago, I became a part of multiple theatre companies which also allowed me to live in NY for a year. I began teaching elementary school age kids theatre as well. While performing and traveling, my love for fashion and clothing was also my happy place and outlet. I have always loved to live out loud especially when it came to my clothing and sneakers. I have always been the one that people call when they’re looking for an outfit that is going to stand out and be different. I love to shop just as much as I love to perform! I never realized what I was doing for my friends and family was styling them and creating their wardrobe. I have a history of fashion from my mother who was a professional buyer and wardrobe manager and my aunt who is a fashion designer but I never understood that I was walking in their footsteps. So the pandemic opened my eyes to not only creating my own IG show called “Black Facts 101” but also becoming an entrepreneur in which the birth of Da Funki Eye Clothing came to life. I haven’t lost my drive for performing but I’m now able to still book great work and keep my hand on the pulse of the industry by styling and doing wardrobe with Da Funki Eye Clothing. I mean we are Wear Funk Meets The Eye!!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As the great writer said, “life ain’t been no crystal stair.” My life has had so many ups and downs. Transitioning from Chicago back to LA and from theatre to film was a bit of a challenge more than I thought it would be. I felt like I had to start all over. But starting fresh isn’t a bad thing. Then becoming pregnant and losing my baby at 7mos was one of the biggest struggles I’ve ever had. My whole world was turned upside down. It was only by the grace of God that I made it through and my amazing family. We were blessed to get a beautiful baby boy shortly after our loss and he is everything. He is one of the reasons why I work so hard because I want to be an example of what it looks like to use every gift God has given you. Starting a business with no money is tough and it’s even harder when you don’t know how to charge for your time. I’ve had to learn how to ask for help in all aspects and use what I have around to make things work.

We’ve been impressed with Da Funki Eye Clothing, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
I have learned to utilize the gifts that God has given me and that I don’t have to wait for someone to give me my big break. I can create and make a way for myself. I learned that we only live one life so we must make the most of it.
