Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyra Knox.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started working in the industry as an actor while also working a corporate job during the week. One day an associate of mines asked me to help produce his project. I realized that not only was I good at it, I loved it! It was more fulfilling for me to be a part of the process from pre-production to post versus being an actor and waiting for the finished product. I quit my corporate job, took a leap of faith, and began working as a full-time producer.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has not been smooth at all. When I quit my corporate job to pursue my dreams, I was 34 years old. I received a lot of backlash because of my age and also because I don’t have children. It was a lot of ‘You should be having children now”, ‘You’re too old”, ‘How are you going to pay your bills”. So when I got hired at a production company to freelance within a month of quitting, it felt amazing. I then had to deal with a lot of insecurities within myself. I started in this game late and I was working with amazing talent who not only went to school for this but also are extremely talented. I soon found my own lane when Tweed Video, a production company I freelance for trusted me with not only producing several series for Verizon Media/In The Know but also casting all of the series as well. When they gave me that enormous responsibility to cast for the multiple series, I took it seriously and wanted to highlight more of my own people’s stories. I was tired of seeing our images in a negative light when I knew all of the positive things that black people do in their community. I’m extremely proud of the work that we have done as a team.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with K.Knox Productions – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
K.Knox Productions specializes in producing. I just want to bring people stories to life. I’m known for my passion and I think my passion and having mentors who believe in me is what has gotten me this far. One of the things that I’m the proudest of is that it’s been almost two years since I left my corporate job and I haven’t failed. I’m still out here working, learning, and getting better at what I do. What sets me apart is again my passion. If I come across an obstacle, I don’t quit. If anything, it empowers me to get even better. I’m constantly going to film festivals, panels, taking classes, and the list goes on. I inspire to become one of the greats like Ava DuVernay and it will happen because I believe in myself.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’m currently working on a documentary right now with a few friends about our mental health during the quarantined. We started filming video diaries at the beginning of April. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would end up capturing the Black Lives Matter Movement. That’s the beauty of docs. You never know where the story will go.
