Meet Kym De Los Reyes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kym De Los Reyes.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kym. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am an artist. I was created to create. I believe we all have gifts God gave us. I have been blessed enough to make a living with mine. I am a painter.

I grew up in Orange County, in the 1980’s, I was surrounded by love, a big family the freedom to explore. This desire to translate my viewpoint to paper was always in me.

Art wasn’t something I was taught to love. It was something I have been doing my whole life intuitively.

I studied in high school and college and earned my Bachelor’s in Fine Arts from CSULB. I was 26… Let’s fast forward past building a life, a beautiful marriage and incredible children to 2016. I was 45 when I heard a whisper in my ear to start painting FULL TIME.

So I went to work full time for myself and started Kym De Los Reyes ART, LLC. I created a space to paint, got a business license, jumped into marketing, painted EVERYDAY honing my craft, I took every opportunity I was given!!! I taught, I gave lessons, I showed, I exhibited, I submitted for everything I could. I jumped at the chance to talk to working professionals, I absorbed everything I could from individuals I admired. I jumped in head first, full speed ahead. NO FEAR, no doubts, only confidence in how I was created. I knew deep down I was called to do this. I had to have faith in God’s plan for me… and that, my friends, is still a lesson I am learning everyday.

The whisper in my ear was a call to start painting so I may draw closer in my walk.

That’s my real story.

I am represented commercially in FINE ART Galleries across the nation! Hawaii, Coronado, Palm Springs and Laguna CA, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida!! My home studio successfully supports itself with the help of an online presence of my own website and the use of social media marketing. I work with the commercial industries, where I am represented by companies who license my work for the use of retail, interior design in the furniture markets. (For example, Macy’s picked up an image of mine that they sell in their stores and online.) I am represented in the Television industry, where set designers have license to use my art in set decoration! TV shows such as 911 Lone Star (starring Rob Lowe), use my paintings to decorate and create a fictional living space. I work closely with galleries to extend my visibility and showcase my work in iconic places like the Del Hotel and Ritz Carlton, painting live or participating in exhibitions. I paint live at events for corporate marketing meetings, grand openings, or personal events such as weddings, I accept commissions from private collectors as well as corporations and continue to pursue new and exciting ways to get my art out there everyday!

The art world has many avenues to travel down. The opportunities are there. YOU JUST HAVE TO HUSTLE. I am on a constant search to generate income from my work in any artistic avenue possible.

It has been four years so far of endless rejections, hard work, dedication, art submissions, countless studio hours, art exhibitions, art fairs, marketing, packing, shipping, inventory, bookkeeping, praying, and betting on myself.

I can’t believe my journey. I am still in a “pinch me’ phase…I can’t believe this is really my life!!! I am blessed with and incredible amount of family and friends who support me every step of the way. Without any of them, I couldn’t do what I do.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has not been without trials.

One of the biggest struggles I face is really just believing in myself without fear or second guessing!!! Confidence in who I am is really my biggest advantage. The minute I lose sight of that or compromise my deep-seated beliefs is when my struggles arise.

Struggles aren’t easy, but they are a chance to grow. It’s what is used to shape us.

Please tell us more about your art.
I like to say I paint my history and I tell my stories on canvas and I live somewhere in between abstraction and energetic illustrations.

I specialize in large scale abstracts, landscapes, small still life, and all things California!

I am so excited that my little business is growing new collectors everyday, I’m thrilled my business has worked with big names and has had great exposure… BUT my I am most proud of the fact that my kids can see faith in action- lived out, in my life, everyday. A sales based life is a hard one, income is never guaranteed. Faith and provision is something I can’t live without. My journey is being used in my own family’s life lessons. That makes me feel so proud.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Future plans for KDA is to keep expanding into new territory on canvas and commercially. Product development is interesting to me. Fundraising for causes, near to my heart, is something I want to be working towards. Working with interior designers is something I will continue to do. I would love to work with a big creative company in retail and marketing. I am always looking for gallery representation and I have goals of another solo show soon…I need to find the right venue or gallery. ..I will be marketing a new collection this year in 2020 as well. I want to tackle works on extreme scales and keep growing my collectors across the U.S. My plans will always try to serve my collectors first! I am so grateful for them.
