Meet Kyla Johnson of Poetik Kakes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyla Johnson.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kyla. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am the owner of Poetik Kakes. We masterfully create pastries and desserts along with handwritten personalized poems that accompany each “Poetik Kake”. Poetik Kakes is a by-product of my obedience to the Word of God. I grew up only wanting to be a doctor. I taught myself how to decorate kakes and sold them. I had the slogan, “I bake kake to make cake, to pay for med school.” It was God that said “trust Me and bake the kake.”

So I moved to LA to grow my bakery, only to find out the move was to grow me. I lived in my car for eight months in total. We thought you would need to be successful in your business to show you that I am all you need.” This was three years ago. Fast forward to the present, the business is growing and we are excited! Kake spelled with a K means to rise above. So, I know that with the promise of God this business will succeed. I’ve learned in this process that what I’m building is not about me. I want the world to have a “party in your mouth” experience while tasting the sweetness of God’s love!

Has it been a smooth road?
Smooth road?! Not by definition. While waiting to start my job that I transferred, I was kicked out of my subleased apartment. The first week or so 8 was able to stay in hotels but soon after, money was low and still hadn’t started my job. I slept in my car from July to November. As bad as it sounds, it was the best thing that happened to me. I asked God why one time and His response was, “I took everything you thought you needed to make to show you that I am all you need.” Hard at first, because I knew that if I could get to an oven I could bake my way into a home but God has other plans. I applied for Nike and started a week later. Right after that training the other job called me. I worked both of them while living in my car, trying to figure it out. I prayed, knowing my other job paid more, I quit. Stayed a Nike, where I still work. I’ve been able to incorporate my love for shoes into my kakes with my program Kakes + Kicks Kollection. Like myself, my business is forever growing and changing and we are taking challenges head on.

Please tell us about Poetik Kakes.
Poetik Kakes was birthed out of Saturday morning baking sessions listening to Tupac and reading Maya Angelou with my grandpa! After I stepped out on the Word of God, and quit pursuing medical school, I focused on providing the masses with a Party in Your Mouth experience while sharing my love of poetry in every bite. Kake spelled with a K means to rise above. So, I know that with the promise of God this business will succeed. I’ve learned in this process that what I’m building is not about me. I want the world to have a “party in your mouth” experience while tasting the sweetness of God’s love! I am most proud of being contracted to sell Poetik Kakes in a local ice cream shop. Though it didn’t work out, it worked! What sets me apart from others is me. When you order from Poetik Kakes you become a part of the story. A story that changed minds inspires the masses and is changing the world.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The cake and dessert business is constantly changing. More grand, more bling, the bigger than better. Expect when you want tiny foods. I believe that with more tools and more artists getting into cake as their medium the possibilities become endless.
