Meet Krystle McKay of K.Lorayne Apparel in The Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Krystle McKay.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started making dress in college as a means to support myself. Dresses would go for $25 and my motto was to never make a duplicate. That is what kept girls coming back and ordering for every dance and/or big event. After realizing how much I loved making them feel confident and free, I decided to take my craft to the next level and start my own business. While in college, I never could afford to move to New York or LA to gain experience in my field, so K.Lorayne Apparel was my way of learning and developing my skills.

In 2014, I was forced to “close my site” so I could work at Saks Fifth Avenue. At the time, I needed the money because K.Lo Apparel wasn’t generating enough revenue for me to support myself. I stopped making clothing for a short period of time but ended up completely revamping my site and coming back stronger than ever. Making everything by hand still, I knew that in order to grow, I would need help. I reached out to seamstress in my area and that was the first time I had ever trusted anyone with a portion of my design process.

I moved to LA in 2018 in search of a new beginning. It was the best thing I could have done for my business. I was able to create a team of people who now manufacturer my clothing and I’m able to focus on the creative and logistical side of the business.

Today, I have grown my business to a great place. I am so happy with the community of women I have cultivated. They support each other and are so interactive. I run everything by them first. If they don’t like something, it doesn’t get produced. This has made it possible for items to sell out almost every time they drop. In the Fall of 2020, I will be dropping my highly anticipated Unisex line.

I am so excited for where I am and what’s to come for my brand. I recently started “Klockwise” a consulting agency for creative entrepreneurs. Klockwise was created to help creatives like myself who struggle with the logistical side of the business. I want to equip people with the tools that I wish I had starting out.

All in all, I’m just so excited and feel so blessed to be where I am today! I thank God for bringing me this far and I know he has so much more in store!

Has it been a smooth road?
Not at all, and if anyone tells you it’s easy being an entrepreneur…they are lying. I always struggled with finding my niche market and serving them properly. I knew what I wanted to make but I couldn’t find the people who wanted to buy it.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with K.Lorayne Apparel – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
K.Lorayne Apparel is a clothing line designed to make women feel comfortable in their own skin. I make clothing that accentuates a woman’s curves without making her feel exploited and vulnerable. I will be expanding to men’s clothing soon and I plan to keep the same mission without accentuating their curves of course! Lol

I am known for my basics. I made it a point to create clothing for women who look like me, without skimping on quality. I source all of my fabric in Downtown LA, and nothing goes to manufacturing without passing the quality test. This is what I feel sets me apart from other brands. I don’t try to hop on every trend that comes around. I pay very close attention to the clothing that I’ve had in my closet for years. Those are the type of pieces I like to create.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the culture and the freedom I had when it comes to creating. I feel like I can be my truest self in LA.

I think people here have a tendency to be a little superficial but I think that just comes with the territory. Everyone has worked so hard to get to where they are that they may have forgotten where they came from.
