Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristine Thompson.
Kristine, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always loved putting together social events for friends and family. I love creating an enjoyable environment full of delicious menus of food and drink and great company. The first wedding I put together was my cousin’s backyard wedding and I was 19. They didn’t have anyone coordinating the details, so I sort of just stepped up and took control. After the wedding, friends and family told me that I should think about going into event planning. I thought about it but was in college and young and didn’t know where life might take me. After 10 years of planning social functions for family and friends, I finally listened to those closest to me and said ‘what the hell!’ My first official wedding/event was for my best friend, Elisabeth. She had no idea where to start with the wedding planning process and I was so excited to help her and her fiancé create this super special day together. From that point on, I hit the ground running. I’ve worked hard and that’s paid off, most of my clients have been referrals from other clients or people who’ve attended one of my events. It’s been really wonderful and I’ve made so many new friends along the way. After several events and numerous weddings, I still learn things all the time from each event. And I love seeing the babies from the couples I’ve helped wed, as of today there are three precious little ones and counting!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been bumps along the way of both a professional and personal nature. Balancing my full-time day job at UCLA health and planning five to six large events a year has been tough. There’s been a lot of lost sleep, two episodes of shingles and the loss of four family members in the last 16 months. But pushing through and overcoming shows me what I’m made of.
Please tell us about Events by Kristine.
I personalize each event to the person or couple being honored. We spend a lot of time together and really get to know each other. I develop such close relationships with my clients that we’ve maintained friendships. It is so important to devote my time and energy to people and ideas I believe in. I’ve done mostly weddings and all the different types of pre-wedding events, some birthdays and retirement parties, a couple of fundraisers, and also memorials/celebrations of life. Currently, I have a family reunion on my roster which I’m really excited about, should be tons of fun!
I’m not a stylist but based on the client’s vision and my experience in putting on events I can offer tons of ideas. My strengths are organization and extreme attention to detail, making me an excellent executor. My events include everything the client desires and on schedule! (which is something that often doesn’t happen with events!)
Because I’m limited in the number of clients I accept each year, it is important that my clients and I have a natural connection and rapport. I feel comfortable with them and they feel comfortable coming to me with any and everything that may come up in their lives. So I choose with care.
I actually charge much less for most of my services than many of my competitors. There are a few reasons for this: 1) I’m looking to provide a service to regular everyday people who may not have access to affordable services of this type (this industry is usually reserved for those with larger disposable incomes), 2) I love to be a part of people’s special moments (happy and sad alike) and 3) I believe that we are all here to support one another and this is how I contribute to the community around me, by bringing joy, love, and support to those around me.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Playing hooky and going to Disneyland every year with my mom and younger brother. Eating churros, corn dogs, and pineapple Dole whips there. Riding Peter Pan together (my mom’s favorite ride). And Small World. And Pirates of the Carribean. Watching the Tiki Room show and Captain EO. Always watching the fireworks and staying until closing time.
