Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristine Phan.
Kristine, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always found solace in constructing, crafting, and working with my hands in general. When I was young, my mom would always have me help style her hair, paint her nails or shape her eyebrows (YES -imagine having an 11 y/o shape your brows). We’d talk about my friends, my school, things I loved, and trinkets of knowledge I’d learned from the people around me. Over the years, I’d made a hobby out of these activities that I enjoyed so much with my mom. In the midst of school and work, I always made time to lend a hand whenever the opportunity to do makeup presented itself.
As a self-taught artist, it was important to represent the Asian woman and Asian aesthetics. There were not many Asian faces in the makeup industry which meant there were also not many Asian looks to be inspired by. That resulted in the name, Nuoc Mam Face. Nuoc Mam is a staple in Vietnamese cooking and I thought it would be a fun spin as an artist brand. I make it a point to include a wide spectrum of skin tones on my page and while my portfolio is not huge (I’m a Behavior Analyst most of the week), I hope what I do have radiates the importance of diversity, all things makeup, and love.
Has it been a smooth road?
This is just a hobby now but I hope to dive in full-time one day.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I have the gift of viewing an individual as a whole and highlighting his/her features as they are. Many of the looks I complete are supplemental to the individual and fit only their faces. I try my best not to squeeze a trending look onto someone unless that’s absolutely what they’d like.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Being a makeup artist in Los Angeles is definitely not an easy feat. The market is saturated in the city just as it is for anyone in any field. It all depends on who you know so I make sure to announce my love of makeup to the strangers I meet. You never know who might be able to help you!
