Meet Kristine and Charles Lopez of Kristine and Charles Photo & Films in San Gabriel Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristine and Charles Lopez.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kristine and Charles. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
We actually found our love for photography & videography together after our first year of marriage. It was definitely a sweet & unexpected discovery. I (Kristine) had purchased a used camera for Charles as a surprise for our one year wedding anniversary. We were headed to Yosemite for a little celebration and wanted to record our trip. At the time, I was working my corporate 9-5 job, where I was marketing for special events and musical theatre in Hollywood. Charles was working in the health field while pursuing his career in nursing. At the time, he also had a love for collecting vintage clothing (a super relevant fact for later!). Both of us had no idea how to work a camera.

Once we started to play around with it, we really began to fall in love with documenting memories. We even filmed a small engagement video for two of our closest friends. Next thing we knew, we were throwing a huge garage sale and selling ALL of Charles’ vintage clothing collection. We used that money to purchase our very first professional camera and launched our business. A little over a year later, we were able to quit our full-time day jobs and now do this full time together. It’s been a wild and sweet ride for sure.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Honestly, we feel incredibly blessed to be where we are now. It has been far from the easiest road. Around the time we quit our full-time jobs to pursue this, we were actually expecting our first child. We lost him at 35 weeks, stillborn. The months after were incredibly difficult. We sort of stumbled our way through that season, but because we had already planned for a maternity/paternity leave, we were thankful to have some time away from work. It forced us to slow down and focus on each other and our family.

At the same time, we still had that fear of jumping back into things and figuring out what life would look like from that point on. We were learning to navigate the waves of grief while also trying to grow, scale and manage our business. Without a doubt, this was the hardest season we’ve gone through together.

We miss our son terribly, but we don’t shy away from sharing that part of our life. We can’t deny the role it played in shaping our passion and purpose behind what we do. These kinds of events shape you. The photos & videos we had at the hospital – and even those we took before then – are some of our most treasured possessions. It just put a whole different perspective on our work. We know the moments we document are so meaningful, and we feel such a deep sense of gratitude and honor to be able to play a part in helping others remember such a sweet season of life.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We’re a husband & wife photo and video team, specializing in weddings and elopements. For us, a lot of our inspiration is drawn from each couple’s unique story and all the emotions that come along with it. Our joy is in capturing both the bigger, louder moments, as well as the quieter ones in between. There’s so much beauty in those candid moments that are often overlooked. We’re so moved by it.

As far as what we’re proudest of, we’re moreso just grateful. Grateful for all the stories we’ve been able to be a part of. Grateful for all our couples that continue to trust us. Grateful for the opportunities that allowed us to build this business from the ground up. Grateful for our community that has supported us. Grateful to be able to do what we love, and to be able to do it together. Not many people get to do that in this lifetime.

What were you like growing up?
It’s interesting because we’re both pretty different. We’re practically opposite. I grew up completely loving arts and crafts. Anytime I had a chance to do anything remotely creative, I loved it and would go at it for hours. For Charles, I know that he never imagined being a part of something like this. He actually was pursuing a career in the health field until we discovered photography. Growing up, he wanted to be a basketball player, haha!
