Meet Kristine Ko of Kristine Ko Creative Studio in South Bay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristine Ko.

Kristine, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Kristine Ko Creative Studio started in 2011 when I finally overcame my fears and decided to pursue my passion of photography. My love of photography started when I was in high school and became a passion while I was at CSU Fullerton. When it came down to choosing a career path I decided to go the commercial route and chose packaging design.

While I was successful in packaging design, I always wondered if I could have made it as a photographer. I was obsessed with reading photography blogs, wedding blogs and following some influential wedding photographers. I slowly gained the confidence and motivation to get out of my comfort zone and try my hand at photography. I reached out to a few local photographers and was invited to assist on a few of their jobs. As I gained more experience in wedding photography, my business started to grow steadily.

My body of work and the success of my business are due to the friendly, inviting and knowledgeable photographers that I worked with when I was new to the industry. They generously gave me their time and knowledge of the wedding photography business. Without them, Kristine Ko Creative Studio would never have been established.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There was a lot for me to learn about this industry from the technical side of photography, managing client expectations, creating content for social media and learning new computer software. Little by little I gained more clients which led to more referrals. I’m very fortunate to have met wonderful clients and vendors, many who have now become my friends. I’m honored to have been a part of the most important days of their lives.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Kristine Ko Creative Studio is based in the South Bay and specializes in weddings and lifestyle portraiture. My style is organic, romantic and filled with beautiful natural light. My focus is to create meaningful imagery that represents my clients’ personalities and their relationships. I value the relationship I have with my clients and am interested in being a part of their lives and capturing their future milestones.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was painfully shy and quiet. I was uncomfortable being in a crowd, around strangers, the center of attention, in social situations, and meeting new people. In high school, I joined sport teams mainly as a form of exercise; however, it taught me to work in a team environment, to be more comfortable meeting large groups of people and to be able to lead a group of people. One of the most important responsibilities of a photographer is to make people feel comfortable with you and in front of the camera. Being in sports helped me break out of my shell and be able to lead.

Besides being in sports, I was also passionate about art. I loved drawing, fine art such as “the great masters”, classic movies with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, architecture and jewelry design. I believe my interest in art and being a designer helps my photography because I can see interesting angles and composition.
