Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin DiMiceli.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
After leaving a corporate-style career in Pharmaceuticals, I began teaching at local studios and Physical Therapy offices in Los Angeles County. It was at this time that I purchased a used Pilates reformer machine and started training friends and family at deeply discounted rates in my own garage. My husband’s job kept us on the move so my slightly used reformer and I actually taught Pilates in five different garages throughout the country: Northern California, the Midwest, New York, and Orange County. We settled in Los Alamitos about five years ago and quickly fell in love with the tight-knit, supportive community. Although I have graduated from the garage studio the name serves as a reminder for the evolution of my Pilates practice.
Has it been a smooth road?
My first thought in answering this question is “Blessed to be stressed”! Our clientele population grew much quicker than we had ever imagined. To provide for our Pilates-loving clients, we simply needed to hire more Pilates Instructors. It came as a surprise to me how challenging this task would be. My solution? Offer a Pilates Instructor Certification program at Garage Pilates! This has proven to be such an asset for our studio. Individuals with a passion for Pilates enroll in our program and in 6 months they have earned their certification to teach Pilates and I also benefit by having another high-quality instructor on staff to service our customers.
This has further allowed me to embrace the idea of growth and expansion. For my own personal workout, I love the way I feel after completing cardio, Pilates and yoga classes. Doesn’t everyone? I wanted to offer my clients the benefits of all these in one location. After careful consideration, we have put together a strategic workout plan that allows clients to experience cardio through Bounce classes, strength through Pilates classes, and toning through our yoga classes. It’s my recipe to fitness success.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Garage Pilates is a boutique Pilates, Yoga, and Bounce studio. Pilates is a precise method of movement which requires fine-tuning and finesse. We prefer to keep our Pilates Reformer classes on the smaller side, maxing out at four clients per class. As an instructor, I need to be able to give each client personalized attention to guide them through a safe, effective, and challenging workout. I take great pride in not only helping my clients improve their health but also in educating them on the Pilates technique as Joseph Pilates intended. I am passionate about staying true to the Pilates method and teaching with integrity which sometimes can contrast with the fiscal motivations of running a business. Although cramming ten people in a class would be more profitable for me, I do not believe an instructor can provide the individual cueing and attention needed to maintain proper form in larger groups. This is why I keep my classes at a maximum of 4.
I love working with teens! We proudly provide the benefits of Pilates and yoga to local high school football, volleyball and baseball teams, as well as various club soccer teams. There are countless benefits for young, developing athletes to incorporate Pilates into their practice. Pilates and yoga focus on lengthening muscles and increasing flexibility which improves durability and performance in all kinds of sports. Bulky and inflexible muscles are prone to injury but by utilizing the natural full-body flow of Pilates, young athletes sculpt long, lean muscles. This builds resistance to injury, increases strength and improves explosiveness. Our young athlete program aims to instill healthy workout habits and optimum postural awareness in younger clients. With consistent yoga and Pilates practice, these individuals will build self-esteem, strong muscles and coordination in a body that is changing and growing.
Our Yoga program has just as many male clients as female! On Sunday mornings, you will find several couples attending class together to start their day off with health and meditation.
The trampoline bounce classes are our newest addition. There are so many benefits to rebounding:

Where do you see your industry going over the next 5-10 years? Any big shifts, changes, trends, etc?
I feel everything is cyclical. Joseph Pilates developed a most precise form of movement with specific cues and designated sequence. His method is proven effective to better our health and physical fitness. There is a trend now to take what he created and add one’s own flair. I support this as long as it is safe and purposeful – I always know the “why” when I ask my clients to move a certain way. My belief is this is fleeting. The extravagant flair will become too much and we will once again revert back to what we know to be true. Joseph Pilates’ method of movement works. Don’t reinvent the wheel.
In the past, Pilates studios have ordered their equipment from 4 major manufacturers. I foresee this phasing out and independent production increasing. We already have variations of the original reformer infiltrating the market now, this will only expand in my opinion. In fitness, we now have the option of either physically going to a location to workout or staying at home and following a routine online. The big question in our industry now is: what is next? I predict a marrying of the 2. Fitness facilities will offer packages that allow clientele to experience classes a few days a week and continue with their regime at home the other days. This is practical and already happening in a less formal, less monitored manner.
