Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristen Holstrom.
Kristen, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I knew that I wanted to be an attorney since I was about 12 years old. I started out pretending to be my father’s secretary at his law firm. In high school, I worked in the office making copies and stuffing envelopes and was a law clerk there during law school. My journey has been filled with a lot of hard work, dedication and discipline. My parents instilled a strong sense of independence in my siblings and me; I went to school on an NCAA Division 1 full soccer scholarship and worked for extra money during college and law school. I’ve been an attorney for almost ten years now. Along the way, I got married to a loving and supportive husband and we have three young children together. I launched the Custody Queens brand in June 2019 with lots of support from Dayn Holstrom and Carrie Block of Holstrom, Block & Parke, and couldn’t do it without my right-hand business partner and dear friend-Custody Queens attorney, Samantha McBride.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I have a lot of scars! Life as a young attorney was not easy. Being a female attorney—and a managing attorney—in a male-dominated profession has additional demands tied to it as well. I am a firm believer that the job begins and ends with your level of confidence. You have to “fake it” until you “make it.” I remember, on one of my very first cases, the judge couldn’t hear me because I was stuttering. I sat on the wrong side of the counsel table and swore myself in, which is something that clients—not attorneys—are supposed to do! I share this because I want people to remember that great attorneys are created from their mistakes, persistence, and all-around hard work. I refused to give up, and got up every day and every time I was knocked down. Now, after almost a decade as an attorney, I am known in the legal community for my tenacity, courtroom presence, and outspokenness.
Balance is another struggle. There is a certain level of “mom guilt” that comes with working as much as I do. Every day is a balancing act for who needs attention the most, and a daily self-affirmation that I am doing my best. I’m modeling for my children how to be a “boss lady” while simultaneously giving my kids the time and care they need. For my clients, I am providing the highest level of advocacy and representation that they can get. For myself, I am staying true to who I am. I am a loyal friend, fierce attorney, and energetic “boss lady.” I also am a “softy” for my children, spill my coffee about five times in an average week, and am notorious for mixing up age old maxims—it’s the blonde in me. I am almost always dressed in a black suit too.
Please tell us about Custody Queens.
Custody Queens is a boutique law practice specializing in divorce and child custody matters, specifically cases of high complexity. I am a family law attorney, a Certified Family Law Specialist, which is a designation given by the State Bar of California to attorneys with the highest level of expertise in this area of law. Custody Queens’ style blends tenacity, expertise, experience, and empathy. I find a lot of common ground with my clients, many of whom are working parents themselves balancing a career and wanting the very best for their children. We are real. We are attorneys and educators. We tell you exactly what you’re facing in terms of your case, what you can expect through every step of the process, what you can do to set yourself and your kids up for success years down the road, and address areas where you might lack accountability. We set out to provide a hands-on, holistic representation that you frankly won’t get anywhere else. The response to Custody Queens so far has been tremendous. I’m watching the mission manifest itself as the team continues to grow, and I am very proud of that. We offer an experience rather than just an attorney. Our team is far more than just “an advocate.”
