Meet Kristen Drayton of Natural Born Beauty in Pasadena

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristen Drayton.

Kristen, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My interest in skin care began long before my career as an Esthetician. I dealt with sensitive skin issues from childhood, which only grew worse as I reached adulthood. After receiving very little help from the dermatologist for my particular condition (Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation) it was suggested that I try an esthetician for treatment, The esthetician I sought out specialized in corrective skin care for the face and body, which is what I needed at the time. After a series of treatments my skin began to clear up; in the meantime, I began my own research and became somewhat obsessed with obtaining beautiful clear skin. Through my research and my background in Biology, my eyes were opened in reference to all of the harmful ingredients that are placed in our skin care products. As a result of the knowledge gained through my experience, I decided to pursue a career in skin care in order to help others who were suffering from skin problems. My skin condition was truly a blessing in disguise. Had I not experienced it, I wouldn’t have the empathy that I do for others; therefore, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

I completed Esthetics school and obtained my license in August 2015, and immediately began working. In addition to skin care, I also provide makeup services, which falls under the Esthetician License. Makeup Artistry has opened many doors for me in the beauty industry that I did not expect to happen so soon. I recently had the privilege to work as a Makeup Artist with “The Raw Beauty Project LA 2016” Photography Exhibit. The exhibit was featured in the Oprah Magazine in 2015, and the Pasadena Magazine in 2016. This amazing project was created to highlight women from all walks of life with disabilities, and showcase their beauty, talent, and passion. I absolutely love what I do, and I feel so blessed to be here.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Just because you’re passionate about something, and have a talent, doesn’t mean you will not face any obstacles during your journey. To be honest, I still face obstacles in my business today, but I understand that it comes with the territory of entrepreneurship. Prior to beginning my career in Esthetics, I worked in the healthcare industry doing a job that I did not enjoy. Towards the end of my healthcare career, I started school for skin care. It was definitely a challenge to work a full-time job that was very stressful and maintain my focus on school. However, with God’s help, and support from family and friends I endured until the end.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Natural Born Beauty – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Natural Born Beauty is a full-service spa located inside of Classie Nail Care Salon in the South Lake District of Pasadena, CA. NBB provides customized facial and body treatments, that target the specific needs of various skin types and conditions. In addition to skin care, we provide beauty services, such as makeup artistry, eyelash extensions, and waxing.

NBB caters to all skin types, but we specialize in the care of darker pigmented skin, such as people of African or Hispanic descent, and other minority skin types. This is because skin with a higher concentration of Melanin (a complex protein that determines skin, hair, and eye color) tends to become hyperpigmented when any type of trauma occurs on the skin. Thus, treatment of the skin must be approached with a bit more caution than those with fairer complexions.

As a company, we are most proud of the fact that our clients recognize that we care about them as people, and many friendships have been formed as a result.

What sets NBB apart is the fact that we place an emphasis on providing client skin care education beyond the treatment room. One of our goals for 2017 are to provide skin care seminars/workshops in the community, to educate people on the importance of skin care as it pertains to achieving optimal health. NBB is also available to clients in between appointments to address their individual skin care needs.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
At the moment, I’m not planning for any huge changes, since I’m in the early stages of my business. However, my future plan for Natural Born Beauty is to grow as big as it possibly can. I would eventually like to see NBB become a franchise
