Today we’d like to introduce you to Krista and Per-Olov Pettersson.
Krista and Per-Olov, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My husband and I LOVE music and dancing!!! We launched Thousand Oaks DJ Company four years ago when we found that we were informally DJing friends’ and friends’ of friends parties more and more often. My husband had started a successful DJ company while still a teen-ager growing up in Sweden. Later, after coming to the U.S. to study, he really enjoyed hosting a college radio station, so DJing has always come naturally to him.
Meanwhile, I was looking for a way of further bringing our diverse family of five music loving sons, one biological, three adopted and one foster, together as a team. A family DJ company seemed the perfect enterprise!
Today, we’ve amassed a varied, substantial and always growing catalog of music as well as the professional grade equipment necessary to provide a club like sound. We also offer clients an exciting array of dance floor lighting and effects enabling creation of the perfect party ambiance whether at a formal venue or in their own living rooms or backyards.
Thousand Oaks DJ Company is a small, family operation dedicated to making people happy! We play the music our clients want to hear, and nothing satisfies us more than to see a dancefloor hopping!!!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Early on, one of our main challenges was for our family members to learn to work together smoothly and professionally on the job. Inter-family squabbling wasn’t an option which meant that everyone had to grow their patience and respect for one another. Our united purpose, to provide excellent DJ service, had to be foremost in our minds.
Another challenge has been where to store and how to transport our growing inventory of sound and lighting equipment. Loading equipment from and then back into our home garage each time we had a gig soon became a job in itself, so when we were finally able to purchase a trailer for storage and transport, we were thrilled!
Most recently, our sons, and business partners, have been growing up and finding other interests and distractions for their time. Our two younger sons still help with set-up then tear down after gigs and will thankfully DJ the teen-age parties we play, but, lately, my husband and I find that we alone are the DJ team, and that is just fine too. DJing has become our opportunity to spend time together doing something we truly enjoy – playing music and creating a wonderful party experience for others!
Thousand Oaks DJ Company – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We at Thousand Oaks DJ Company work very hard to customize our service to the unique needs of our clients. We invite them to have as much creative control over the playlist as they desire. At the party, we want host and guests enjoying THEIR favorite music (not ours) whether it be polka tunes, classic rock hits or little kid favorites like Itsy Bitsy Spider.
Clients often ask how much room we need for our equipment. The answer is that we can make any amount of available space work.
Further, we bring everything needed for the job including DJ table and extension cords. All a client need provide is access to electricity and a Wi-Fi password, if available.
Some of the dancefloor lighting and effects that we offer include moving, colored laser lights, mirror ball; projectors that shoot large, moving colored patterns on walls, ceiling and dancefloor; liquid sky laser light that creates a moving ceiling effect when combined with fog; a variety of colored disco lights; black light; spot light; fog machine and bubble machine.
Thousand Oaks DJ Company has the capability to provide crisp clear sound for both small and large venues. We’ve played in tiny living rooms to under twenty guests as well as at large sports fields with hundreds of people gathered.
Karaoke is another service we provide, and mics are always available to clients for singing or their own announcements.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Our proudest moment occurred as we DJ’d a party this past Halloween. One of the guests had placed a cup of punch on our DJ table which accidently spilled into our computer keyboard causing it to suddenly cease working. The song playing at the time was nearly over, so there were only seconds to get the next song up and running. Quickly, we connected my husband’s cell phone to an input on our mixer and cued up another song. He then ran at top speed to collect a spare computer from our trailer. Within just moments, we were back in business! The party host’s playlist was again in front of us, the music had never stopped, the dancefloor was still at capacity, and no one appeared to have even noticed the sudden outpouring of perspiration we’d experienced!!!
